    Mike A ?

Did Michael Anthony play on the 3 new songs or was it Ed who did the bass?

According to recent studies, it was a studio guy with Steve Lukather from Toto singing back up. Later Mikey was redubbed in with the rest of the back up.

For some reason I don't think it was Mike, I don't even think he was there except to throw some backing vocals on IAT.

Just because MA didn't receive writing credit doesn't mean he didn't play on them--although I don't think he did.

Yeah, he also didn't receive some credit on 1984. But still I know it was on an interview or two about it. One with Hagar and then one with someone else.

From what I heard, Eddie played bass on it as well as guitar.

    Doubtful though.

I'm probably the only one on this planet who doesn't know this, but why is it that they don't let Mike play on studio stuff anymore?

Must we rehash this argument again? Mike did not get credit for "writing" the 3 new songs because he had nothing to do with writing them. He does not write much music or lyrics, if any at all. He is listed as playing bass on the CD. What really goes on is studio is anybody's guess.

From 1978-1998, VH decided that the 4 of them (whoever was in the band at the time) would each be credited with writing a song regardless of who actually actually wrote what. What they did in 2004 is accurately give the proper credit; thats all. On BOV1 Mike is, in an admitted typo error, omitted from writing a few songs (Jump & Panama I beleive are the 2).

Keep this in mind. Dave & Mike are both credited with 25% of songs like "Eruption", "Cathedral", "1984" and so on. Mike & Sam are credited 25% each on songs like "316", "Doin Time" and so on. Here is an even better one. We know that "Strung Out" was recorded in 1983 while Ed & Val stayed ata friend's beach house, yet Mike, Al & even Sam are credited with co-writing that one. Sammy wasn't in the band at the time. Hell, Valerie had more to do with that song than Sam did!!

I think this is part of the big problem with the band, for whatever reason MA stopped being a contributing member of the band. No Mike does not write music but from what I understand-Sammy stated this while he was on the outs-Alex does not write much music either. I read a thread on here a long time ago where this guy disected the bass playing on 3 and concluded that Mike only played on FITH and BOTB which to me are two of the most "Van Halen" sounding songs on the cd. They have that whole band groove going on. It's missing on the BOBW stuff too. We all know Mike is not Billy Sheehan but he does not need ot be. His playing on 5150, OU812-when you can hear it, FUCK and Balance is fine, it does what it's supposed to do-hold down the low end. Mike's backing vocals are sooo essential to the sound of the band, listen to the begining of IAT and then listen to the middle where Mike actually puts down some backing vocals. Ed needs to stop trying to be an "everyman" in Van Halen, yes he's a genius but he can't do it all and still maintain the sound of the band. Ed wants to play guitar, keyboards, sing backing vocals, help with lyrics, produce, engineer, mix...it's just too much. Compare the sound of the songs from III and BOBW-both of which eddie was very heavily involved in production and mixing to the sound of FUCK or Balance. I say to eddie "shut up and play your guitar.....and keyboards"

We don't know for a fact that Mike did not play bass on the 3 new songs. It is all speculation unless, someone here knows the producer or one of the band members, and they verified it

For what's it worth, here's a question from an interview with Mike from the August 2004 issue of Bass Player...

What was the recording process for the new tracks like?

Everything has remained pretty much the same when it comes to the way Van Halen does things. As a band, we're always most comfortable playing in a live situation, so we cut live in the studio. There's nothing like playing with your brothers in a room; that's how we've always made our music, and that's where it always sounds and feels the best. Even when digital tape was still happening, we would record on analog because the sound was better. Maybe's it's just being Old School, but that's the way we all grew up. We're into what sounds the best, not necessarily the newest, latest, and greatest things.
