    Default Eddie copied George Lynch????

Just reading an interview with Mark Kendall from Great White on the Melodic Rock website. Anyhow, he says that he heard a rumour that Eddie copied George Lynch. Here's the part of the interview:

Mark: George Lynch, when he used to play in The Boyz, he was doing that right hand thing on the finger board before Eddie was.

    Ron: You're kidding?
Mark: No. So he would face his amp when he did that part.

    Ron: Wow.
Mark: What they say is, now this is just the rumor, but Eddie knew what he was doing, kind of took that idea, now he probably wouldn't admit to it, but this is just what I heard because I grew up around all those guys, I know a lot of other guitar players too, and what they said is Eddie just turned it more into a musical thing, where Lynch made it more of a noise maker.

    Ron: Yeah.
Mark: Like he used to do the hammer-offs but he also did a lot of sliding with his right hand and stuff.

    Ron: Yeah.
Mark: And when he would hammer with his left hand, instead of alternating fingers, he said he had a hard time doing that so he would slide his finger back and forth.

    Ron: Okay.
    Mark: Lynch. You know.

    Ron: That's cool.
Mark: Eddie just turned it into more of an orchestrated thing, like with “Eruption”.

    Ron: Sure.
Mark: He would literally, you know, put beautiful melodies together incorporating that right-hand.

Ron: That's funny, because they're both phenomenal guitarists, but they definitely have distinctive styles.
Don: Yeah, with George Lynch I don't think of him as much of doing the hammer-ons and tapping but he always seemed to be more efficient at very fast plucking. He really sort of perfected that.
Mark: Yeah, he definitely has his own kind of thing. I just went and saw him the other day. This guy came down from this radio station called WMMT and he did a couple of shows with me. I can't think of where it was…

Anyone think there is any truth to this?

The truth is, it wouldn't really make a difference. Nobody else made eruption, spanish fly, etc. Edward did.

This stuff seems pretty trivial when we never see Eddie play again live the way things are going.

I also heard that Dave ripped off Don Dokken. Apparently Don was the first one to open his mouth while singing but Dave took it and made it his own.

Actually, that's pretty interesting stuff about George Lynch.
Probably has some truth too it.
    Every innovation starts somewhere.
The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.

I remember Billy Gibbons said he tapped a little before Eddie, Lynch and Vai did it.

    Yeah, whatever

Lynch is just a noisemaker; decent soloist and all but couldn't write a good song if his life depended on it...

I obviously don't know Mark, but this sounds like total bs. I mean, George's original group, the Boyz, only played one freakin' gig with VH back in the clubs days!! In fact, that was the gig where Gene Simmons discovered VH!! I respect George as a player, but EVH did NOT get tapping from George. He was doin' that waaay before VH played that one gig with the Boyz. I actually dedicated an entire chapter of my upcoming VH book to TAPPING. It pretty much gets into the history of it and how players like Steve Hackett and Harvey Mandel where doin' it and puttin' it on record before EVH did. In fact, I interviewed both Harvey & Steve for my book!!! They were way cool and gave EVH major respect.

Bottom line is none of these guys invented it, but EVH is DEFINITELY the one who put it on the map and popularized it. So as far as my research shows, um, no, he didn't get it from George. Frankly, I can't believe Mark would even say that...wow...who knows where he got that info from but it's 100% wrong. In fact, I have interviews with George where he flat out admits stealing a buncha stuff from EVH!!!

I don't care. No one else is Eddie Van Halen.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

I read an old interview with George Lych where he commented back in the club days he saw Eddie perform live (mid 70's). George said he was so blown away by Ed, he got really depressed and thought about giving up playing guitar (no bs hear). We all know George kept plowing away and became a great guitarist in his own right (still no Eddie, but who is?).

I love George Lynch's playing, there is zero reason to rip on him. He's still a great player and he's a nice guy as well. One of the more original-sounding shredders of the 80's, and some of his Lynch Mob shit is great. "Wicked Sensation" is one of the most underrated hard rock records, check it out if you've never heard it.

And he's had NOTHING but nice things to say about Eddie Van Halen forever, so leave it at that. He's also said many times that Ed was the first to take guitar playing to a new level and everyone who followed him owes Ed for paving the way.

All that need to be said.

And Allan Holdsworth and even Brian May were putting both hands on the fretboard before Ed anyway. Ed didn't invent tapping, but he took it to a place nobody else had, no matter WHO was doing it first.
