Do you mean the origin beyond the fact that 5150 is a California police code for an insane person?

I always wondered how the song got it's name, because the lyrics don't really go with the police code meaning...

My thinking is that back in 1985-86, Eddie and the guys were still young enough to think that "crazy" was cool (see LWAN video wherein Sammy refers to Alex being in "Bocephus" mode, which is "partying as hard as one possibly can". Sammy also points out that it is only a smidge less than "5150").
I have a feeling when they first heard what 5150 meant, it kinda stuck, like a cool new saying that only you and your friends use.
As far as the song goes, the lyrics alaways made me think of what it's like being in a selfish relationship. That there are givers and takers and the takers always want "one more, they're never satisfied". Hence 51-50.
I always dug the fact that Sammy chose to sing about something OTHER than someone who was criminally insane. That would've been funny though.
5150 is also, without a doubt, one of the best records to workout to...and the song has always been one of my favorites.
Then again, I could be wrong about everything I just said...

Ed built the studio following Diver Down and every album from 1984-on has been recorded there. Why Ed choose "5150" I don't really know. My best guess is building your own recording studio in your backyard was not a normal thing to do and someone must have said to him "Ed, you're crazy" and it grew from there.

I know the album title "5150" was generated from that explanation as people were telling VH that they were crazy to continue without Roth. (Disclaimer: PLEASE do not turn this into a Dave v Sam thread).

5150 was first used as the name of the studio prior to the release of 1984.

Don Landee and Eddie came up with it. It had nothing to do with Sammy because I believe its actually on the credits for 1984.

Why they used it may have had something to do with Eddie being known as "out there" amongst industry insiders.

True, the studio name 5150 was on the credits of 1984 ... however, depending on which version of 1984 (which pressing you get) the credits may or may not have it. I have wondered if the pressings of 1984 after 5150 was released had "recordered at 5150" on it or if it was on the pressings before 5150. Does anyone know?

Obviously, these guys have heard the term 5150 before since it is a California police code. Maybe they were sitting on the couch in the studio watching TJ Hooker or something and heard it and thought it was funny and then named the Studio 5150.

From that point on, it evidently got nuts. Eddie put it on his guitars, named an album 5150, then the Peavey 5150 amp ... then somehow it wound up on a tattoo of mine. DAMN. Funny how it gets around.

I vaguely remember reading a guitar magazine article from nearly 20 years ago where eddie said that they had a police scanner set up in the studio which the band would listen in to from time to time. eddie said that when he heard the annoucement, ""we got a 5150" come over the scanner, he checked to see what that code meant. when he learned that it meant "a criminally insane person", he ''tripped out" on how funny and strange that seemed. from then on he adopted the code as his own.

"5150" the song has a different meaning...
it's about how some people seem to take more than they give...hence the line "always one more...you're never satisfied"...instead of splitting stuff 50/50, people always want 1 more...51/50...

something like that...i saw an interview with sam explaining it...seemed to make sense...

I thought Ed said in an old interview that he named it 5150 because at the time when 1984 came out he thought everyone around him was nuts, and he thought he was the sane one, and then eventually he said something like maybe it was just him, so he named everything 5150 for an escaped mental patient.

In "The Inside", Issue 6, page 14, lower right hand corner, there is an explanation there of 5150 being a California statute for a 72 hour involuntary psychiatric admission for "hold for grave disability". The common use now is for somebody that appears insane.

What I remember reading is Eddie and somebody else (Donn Landee?) listening to a police scanner, and hearing the term in reference to an escaped mental patient, both thought that was funny and ran with it.

I won a prize package on one of our local radio stations by being the first caller to say what a 5150 is, giving the statute, police code reference, and everything I could think of in reference to Eddie - recording studio, amps, album, song, etc. The DJ says to me "Ummm, yeah, a crazy person, I guess you're right".

I thought it was named after the 5150 Tattoo studio on Van Nuys Blvd in Van Nuys. j/k. But I did get my last tac there because of the name!
