Default 2 Hurricanes and vacation cruise and a little VH.

Hiya Linkers, just got home EARLY this morning from COZUMEL and what a, "Bitch" Emily was....

Saturday, a week ago, we went down to New Orleans to catch the Carnival Cruise ship, "Conquest". We were to leave sunday afternoon, but thanks to Hurricane Dennis, the Conquest had to float around in the gulf an extra day, because the port on New Orleans was "Closed". So, Dennis comes ashore early sunday morning around Pensacola Fla, and New Orleans gets some wind, about 40mph at best, and a little rain. **COUGH**

The Conquest comes into port early monday morning around 4am. We board around 2pm, and set sail around 5pm. Our little "Love Boat" ride was suppose to take us to, 1. Jamaica, 2. Grand Cayman, 3. Cozumel. Well, since we're a day late leaving New Orleans, we're gonna by-pass Jamaica....NO BIGGIE!. Out into the Gulf of Mexico we go....the gulf is so choppy from Hurricane Dennis, the "Love Boat" turns into the U.S.S. Nausea. Totally sucked, even tho I never got sick, many.....many ppl did.

Ok, the gulf settles down some about midway between New Orleans and the Cayman Islands. A good 2 days at sea without seeing land.....next morning, BOOM, we're in Grand Cayman. Hooo-Fuckin-Huray!!! Off the boat we go, and begin to explore all the wonders that Grand Cayman has to offer.........WELL......the only thing that Grand Cayman is offering to us weary travelers is, utter distruction and devastation from, YEP, you guessed it, HURRICANE IVAN from Sept 2004. This place is in total ruins. Piles upon piles of homes and palm trees as far as you can see. The British gov't is trying its best to rebuild, but they have a long road ahead of them. In fact, our tour guide, Ms Phyllis (love ya Ms Phyllis) who by the way was soooooooo cool, just got her windows for her home last wensday. No windows in her home since sept 2004. WTF??? Anyways, we went swimming/diving with the sting rays, sea turtles..etc, which was very cool. Later that evening, we make our way back to where the boat was docked. Near the dock, is the Tortuga rum factory. I stop in there to buy 8 bottles of vanilla rum, and they promply ship it out to the boat. And the cool thing is, it's VERY CHEAP, and no tax, baby!!!! 8-1 liter bottles for 50 bucks. Can't beat that.

As were making our way back to the boat, I notice the local police of Grand Cayman, city of Georgetown/Hell, are placing giant red flags on the docks, and the port becomes offically closed. Ms. Hurricane Emily is only and few hundred miles to the east, and she wants to pay the islands a visit. Apparently, she was gonna finish what her brother IVAN, didn't. Sheeze, The Cayman islands are under a Hurricane Warning. (Prayin for ya Ms. Phyllis). We get on the boat, and we're outta there, heading west into the sunset toward Cozumel.

1 full day at sea, partying and throwing our way up to beautiful Cozumel. Next morning, we arrive. Place is awesome. Weather is great, but I can't help but to think about those wonderful people, esp Ms Phyllis of the Caymans. Anyways............this is the last stop for me and my crew (family). Our plan was to stay in Cozumel for 2-3 days. So, we arrive, and we're off the ship, thank god, and on our way to the Playa-mia resort. Felt pretty good, until I got to our resort......I knew that bitch called Emily was bitch slappin the people of the Cayman's, but I just knew that the storm would move/turn more to the Northwest and make it's way out into the gulf, missing the Cozumel/YUCATAN PENINSULA. But NO..........the locals are expecting to hit directly. This storm is a Cat 4 by now.....So, we spend our last friday for everything that it's worth. Mucho drinks, mucho beach, mucho food, mucho music, and some great people. By late friday evening, a hurricane watch is posted for us.... GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, we spend the night hungover of course, in this little grass/bamboo hut, that's on the beach. Saturday, is another wonderful day, and we spend 1/2 the day exploring, drinking, more exploring.........drinking...etc....we get back to our resort late saturday evening and just do our thing. People are not generally worried about this storm...YET. Went out on the beach and see a TON of news crews reporting about the appoaching storm. So, I wander out there myself, and I happen to find the "Weather Channel" crew about 1/4 mile from where we're staying. I talk to meteorologist Mike Bettes <sp>, who is there covering the storm. He's a real nice guy, but here's the VH content. I was wearing my Cabo shirt and he ask me if I was a VH fan, so I tell him that I am, and he replies, that they are is favorite rock band of all time. So, we shoot the shit for a little longer, about the state of the band, and this god forsaken shit storm that's about to rock us. I tell him about the links also. FREE PLUG BRETT!! So, hopefully he'll stop by and join up. It'd be cool to pick his brain about tornados and shit.

Sunday is the day/night from hell. Hurricane Warnings are up, and the resort is making us evac out of there, into town. Most of the hotels/schools are evac centers, our option of flying out is NONE! Airport shut down early sunday. So, me being a firefighter, I make the call that we outta evac to the firestation inside of downtown. So there we are, we get to the station, and those guys welcomed us with open arms. One thing I've learned about firefighters, it doesn't matter what country your from, if your a firefighter, other firefighters have your back, reguardless of sex, color, religion..etc. Those guys bunked us up for the night. So, there we sat with these guys having a blast with them, when the BITCH came calling. It was sunday evening when the first hard wind/rainbands hit. And the shit got ugly real quick, each passing hour. The guys at the station didn't hang there for long, they got called out shortly after the storm came in, and we didn't see them again until 9 am monday morning. The wind blowning from this storm was incredible. I can only assume it was at least 120mph if not faster. There was all types of shit hitting the side of the firestation, that I wasn't sure if it was cars, garbage cans, trees, roofs or what. All I know I was hopin like hell it wasn't human whatever it was. And the wind HOWLS!!!!!!!!!!! It fucking screams. It's very spooky sounding. And the rain hits stuff like a ton of golf balls hitting the side of a tin building. It was the loudest thing I've heard next to a DLR era VH concert. I was really suprised that the firestation didn't loose any of it's windows, but that building stood it's ground against the forces of mother nature. But I guess the strangest thing about this storm is, as quick as it moved in, it moved out just as fast. When the winds came down to a refreshing 40-60 mph, I went outside in the back of the station. Everything was dark, and there was shit scattered EVERYWHERE. I couldn't tell what was intact and what wasn't. But when morning light came up, there was alot of damage to buildings and a ton of trees bent over. The guys came back to the station because they had a shift change to do, and got to hear some of the war stories from them, about the storm. They advised us that the damage was severe, but not as bad as they have seen from other storms, which was good to hear.

1 thing which suprised me was that I still had cell phone service. Me and my crew had to figure out how and when we were gonna get the hell out of there and make it back home. I called Delta, and they advised me that the airport would reopen around noon. Plus, they also informed me that my tickets we're still good, but don't plan on leaving on monday...WHAT?????? There were so many tourist that we're trying to leave once the storm had passed, that our orginal flight had been cancelled, and would have to be rescheduled...........**now imagine the cluster fuck that going on now....** So, we spent most of yesterday (monday) in a hotel lobby, along with about 1000 or so other ppl. I get a call from Delta around 3pm yesterday, advising me that our flight would depart from Cozumel to New Orleans at 5am. (tuesday) So, all that told me was that we're gonna spend another sleepless night trying to get to the airport in time to leave. We got a cab..FINALLY.....and head out to the airport around 8pm yesterday evening, and spent the night in the airport termial. We boarded our plane at 4:20am this morning, got to New Orleans 7:45........good to be back on US soil, and grabbed a flight out of New Orleans and arrived back here in Shreveport shortly after 9:30 this morning.

BUT...........there is a silver lining to this story. This evening, I hung out with Sixstring at the Horseshoe Casino. He's in town winning tons of money!! Met up with him and bought a round of drinks for him and his crew, and shot the shit with him for about an hour. I would have loved to stay longer, but I was/am mentally and phsically, BEAT THE FUCK DOWN!!!!!!

This vacation had many up's and downs, esp on the Gulf of Mexico, but it basically sucked. Bottom line here is, DON'T CRUISE on the ocean durning hurricane season. Oh, by the way, Sixstring is taking Horseshoe for every freakin penny they have. RAPE EM SIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I'm out!

HH---just read your vacation horror story. I'm glad you all made it back home safely. We had a TON of people diverted to Cabo from Cancun and Cozumel. We've never seen the area that busy this time of year. We met several people on our flight who were supposed to be flying to Cancun/Cozumel and had their flights changed b/c of Emily. Your story was amazing...I hope I never have to live through something like that! I'm sure you're glad to be back home!
    Meet me in Cabo!
