HOW DID VAN HALEN BLOW IT?

I just saw Robert Plant at the Auditorium theater-here in Chicao, and he is still awesome!
He is obviously older, but has retained his cool, and inspired me with his new
Mighty Rearranger tour mixing the mystical, blues, and rock sounds that made Zep the number 2 selling band of all time! His stage persona and voice are still excellent!

I remember thinking in the 90's that Van Halen was destined to become the next Led Zeppelin. When I heard "Humans Being" and "Respect the Wind" off of the Twister soundtrack, I thought that they had almost sealed the deal. 4 or 5 straight number 1 albums, killer tours, and I believe a grammy nomination for Respect The Wind. Van Halen could do no wrong - I looked forward to what was next.

We all know what happened next - Can they ever return to the status before the '96 fiasco? What can they do now? Should they continue on in ways like Zep, Plant, Page and Jones doing inspired slight deviations from the norm tours, like Page solo? Plant solo, etc.? Any ideas?

I guess they allowed their inner insecurities to get the best of them. And alcohol abuse may lead to inspiration on stage or in short glimpses but it fucks you up in the long run.

    To answer your question, NO.

When this last reunion started Sammy was only part time, and that was before he started going on the radio slamming Ed and talking about how miserable the tour was and that he would "never do it again."

Dave it seems is going to be a morning drive time DJ, and Mike will probably follow Sam because he is sick of Ed as well.

Not a recipe for long term success.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

David Lee Roth is going to become Stern's replacement.

Sammy Hagar is going to say another three different things on his opinion on last years tour like he did when he was no more in '96.

Gary Cherone is building houses because Extreme will not have a reunion themselves.

Eddie Van Halen is fucked up after thirty one years of music with his band and helping others with no credit being given to him.

Michael Anthony is the Tony Blair of this as he seems to kiss Hagar's ass and not say anything himself (because I sure as hell haven't).

Alex is obviously too old and should check into the Retirement House where he will do something to pass the time like looking through the window because everyhing else has been banned for the seniors there.

Ted Templemen is currently missing and was last seen going into a UFO with Elvis, Hitler and Ace Frehley and are all hitting it at 4:20 with Cheech and Chong.

Didn't Extreme play some shows in Japan recently? Probably still right about the building houses thing though.

They were on VH1's Bands Reunited and they had everyone but the guitarist. I don't even think he wanted to even talk about the band.

    Default maybe

Maybe Ed's tired of trying to live up to the image we all have of him (or most of us, at least). Al and Mike are just going along for the ride, but I am sure they are feeling their age and know they cant be this party hardy band forever. I feel that Ed still loves making music, but is tired of the rock star scene.

To me, what would be cool is if (and I know this has been discussed here before) Ed put out a solo album...or maybe Ed Al and Mike put together some stuff and released it without having to tour or promote. Just get back to making music. Its a thought.

What killed this band is Eddie inablility to deal with reality. One of the things Ed keeps on saying that drives me nuts is that he has to be happy before anyone he can make anyone else happy. Ed can't deal with reality so he's constantly not happy. I don't know when it happened-1994 maybe but Eddie changed. At first I thought he was just pissed at Sammy but he has never been the same. Read any article from 1978-1993 and ed is pretty much happy go lucky, loved working with Sammy and loved making music. then in 94 he just transformed into this hateful, whiney little bitch.

Look how he acted on the last tour, writing shit all over himself, drunk, rubbing lemons in his eyes...he needs help.

I don't think the band will ever be what they were with sam or with Dave and it's really sad. Ed is a mess and it seems like no one can help him.

I think they blew it by not changing the name of the band in 1985.

By keeping the name, and creating the uneccessary comparison to CVH and Van Hagar, they fragmented their audience, which is the biggest mistake you could ever make.

If they called it something else, there would be no formal comparison of the 2, and both bands would stand on their own merits. Instead they set up a situation where they can never win and be at total peace.

I don't agree with the name changing thing, I think that worked to thier advantage for the most part. Everyone could relate to Van Halen-the name in 1986, why change it?

Honestly, they were in a no win situation because they would have been compared with or without a new name. How could they not be? It's still 75% of the same band with Ed writing all the music with whoever is singing.

Worse things have happend than Van Halen never touring again. I mean, with Roth really packing them in lately (Note the sarcasm), and Hagar pushing 60, it's not like these guys are exactly in their prime anymore. Please just let them die, and let them do a one-off at the RRHF with both Hagar and Roth in a couple years. Assuming Eddie hasn't OD'd by then. You know what's really funny...at least with his performance last year...maybe Rolling Stone's ranking of guitar players wasn't that far off a couple years ago.
