    Default 2005 NBA Offseason thread

Figured since we have one for the NFL, we might as well get one going for the NBA. You guys can discuss all your NBA related topics in here. I'm going to close up the 2004-2005 regular season thread. Congrats to the Spurs.

I'm fairly concerned about the whole Larry Brown situation. He's the best coach in the NBA and it would do the Pistons a load of good to keep him on board. However, if he's not able to go, then they need to do something else. Keeping my fingers crossed here-this move will be the biggest of the offseason for the Pistons.

I wouldn't say Larry Brown is the best coach in the league, but he's in the Top 2 or 3.

I can't think of who is better than him. Brown has won w/every team he's been with-I think only 2 losing seasons, could be wrong, and I think that was in his ABA days. He took the Clippers to the playoffs-that says alot in and of itself.

    Yep. He's gone:

    From ESPN.com

Contract had three years, $18 million left
Pistons coach maintains health is the main issue

After back-to-back trips to the NBA Finals under Larry Brown, the Detroit Pistons will have a new coach next season, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com's Marc Stein.

The Pistons and Brown, sources said, moved closer Monday to a buyout of Brown's contract, which has three years left at an estimated $18 million.

It was not immediately known whether the buyout would contain any stipulations that would prevent Brown from coaching another team for this upcoming season.

Brown said as recently as Friday that he was "confident" about returning to the Pistons next season, having overcome season-long speculation about new jobs to lead Detroit to within one victory of back-to-back championships. Yet Brown, according to sources, could not guarantee that his health would hold up for a full season, which Pistons owner Bill Davidson had made a prerequisite for the 64-year-old's return.

It was not immediately known if the buyout arrangement would be finalized Monday.

It also remains to be seen whether Brown -- plagued by serious bladder complications throughout much of the season after hip surgery -- intends to take some time away from coaching or immediately pursue the New York Knicks' vacancy. New York president Isiah Thomas has held off on making Herb Williams his full-time head coach in the event that Brown becomes available.

Ex-Minnesota coach Flip Saunders, who turned down a lucrative offer from Milwaukee while waiting for the months-long Brown saga to reach a climax, is the leading candidate to replace Brown in Detroit but has yet to interview with the Pistons.

Phil Jackson has 9 titles, you guys can argue all day he's not a good coach, but the numbers speak for themselves. He can also quiet a lot of naysayers if the Lakers are successful in the next few years.

Greg Popovich is also a very good coach, I'd put him way up there too.

    So those 3 IMO.

I am pretty sure he had some losing seasons in Philly, and with the Nets, before he got them to the playoffs. I'd have to look up his stats though. Two might be accurate though.

I believe he had two losing seasons out of six here, maybe even three. When he left here though, he was the second winningest coach in Sixers history I believe. He's leaving Detroit as the third winningest coach in their history, and I'm sure he's done it other places. That's why I consider him the best in the business. But you just can't ignore nine rings by Phil, and Greg now has three. So eventhough Larry would get my vote as the best in the league, if I were to go by numbers those two would beat Larry.

First off, let me express my true feelings on Brown leaving Detroit: FFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKK!!!! !!!!!!!!!!! I hate to hear that-he really got that team to play hard and win. I don't see any other coach being able to do that and get through to those guys. I don't recall if he had any losing seasons in Philly or not. I watched a behind the scene special on him or whatever you want to call it and I believe they said he only had 2 losing seasons in his entire career. I could be wrong on that. He got the Clippers in the playoffs one year, which is a feat in and of itself. My whole thing w/Phil is he won these rings while having two of the greatest players to ever play at their peak (MJ and Shaq-having Kobe didn't hurt, but I don't think he was voted in the top 50 players of all time, again, I could be wrong on that). When MJ retired, the first time, the Bulls didn't do much in a weak, watered down Eastern conference. Granted, coaches aren't the ones out there playing. If Jackson were to win w/the Lakers as is (barring any huge trade/free agent landing/etc), then that would make him one of the best. If he were to take of the Hawks/Raptors/or some other scrub team and be successful, then yes, that would make him a great coach. In all the years Brown has been coaching, I can't recall any of the top 50 he ever coached (maybe Robinson or AI, that's all I can think of). I forgot about Pop, yes, he's one of the best coaches in the league today. Anyway, best wishes to Brown, hopefully he won't wander to another team next year or the year after.

Some would argue the other way around though ya know. It's not easy to coach great talent and be successful.
