    Default Wow, Remember 1996?

I was like 6-7 years old at the time, but do you remember the sad year of 1996 for Van Halen? First Hagar leaves VH after the Twister soundtrack, then the upside was DLR reuniting with VH, and the there was the MTV Video Music Awards, which was pretty much the bands downfall thats still going on now. I remember my mom watching MTV in an interview with Eddie and Alex, and mom sayin, what the fuck are they doing? Sure Gary Cherone joined, and big things coodve happened with him, but VH turned it into a joke, which the year 1996 pretty much was. What are your thoughts on '96? Here are mine:

Hagar-had a successful career after Van Halen, so it was probably best that he left/was fired.

Roth-it would have been interesting to see them tour, but thats all. I wouldve wanted to see a new album, cause the way Gary Cherone was treated by fans and the band, it wouldve been a better idea if they had just kept roth. Attitude, though was different. I thought what i heard about what Dave said about the hip issue was bullshit. That was his ticket out.

June 1996, the weekend of the Van Halen convention in Chicago was also the weekend that it was announced that the band had broken up. Put a little damper on things...

I don't remember ever getting so excited about something....and then feeling that disappointment of watching it fizzle before my eyes.
They really coulda done it then. Now, almost ten years later, it seems a bit too late. But yeah, 1996 stands out for two reasons to me...My beautiful daughter Sarah was born, and of course the VH debacle.
Just imagine though, if the reunion had stuck, they could've spent the last 9 years making records and touring with DLR.

Yea, and 8 of those 9 years, we wouldnt have had to wait, and wait, and wait for news and hope it was about roth or hagar coming back to van halen. I think 1996 would have been the perfect year to do it too. The simple reason being, rock was on a downfall, if the reunion had stayed for awhile, the rock we still love that has somewhat died down would still be around, and popular too. There are many things VH and Dave shouldve thought about before both had opened their mouths at each other, and it wouldve been a fun ride, but it was ruined by a stupid ass remark and attitude by DLR. Many thing couldve changed, been done, that never happened

Actually, the perfect time to 'do it' would've been in 1985, with Dave not leaving the best thing that ever happened to him and continuing to ride the creative and commercial peak of 1984.

i guess ya got a good point there, squalen. They shooda continued in 1985. Yet i believe Hagar was a godsend to van halen. hagar improved van halen and also was the reason for their downfall. Still, had roth stayed, the band would still be making #1 albums to this day. Had hagar not broken up with them, theyd still have #1 albums. it was a win-win stuation van halen somehow lost

Yep, leave it to our favorite band to fuck a good thing up, to date, a grand total of 7 times:

    (1) Dave leaving in '85, nobody being able to work it out.

    (2) Sam leaving in '96, nobody being able to work it out.

    (3) Dave cutting two songs in '96, nobody being able to work out the rest of the sessions nor the contracts, nor the kowtowing possibility of a backup 3rd lead singer.

    (4) Hiring the Extreme kid, period....instead of reconciling with either one of the former lead singers.

    (5) Not being able to push a new direction in tone with an unforgiving public and then dumping the Extreme kid.

    (6) Cutting tuneage in '00 with Dave yet again, nobody being able to work out the egos and details.

    (7) Sam and Ed blowing out at the tail end of '04, nobody being able to work out the egos and details and demons.

Sigh. Whadda buncha drama queens. Except you, Mikey. You still da man.

Here's what I remember most about 1996.....my favorite lead singer left my favorite band.

I'm pretty sure I spent the evening being consoled by my favorite pirate.
