    The return of rock near?

Over the last decade we have heard young men and women do nothing but whine whine whine whine and mope. Personally, I'm sick of this poetry/cry-my-eyes-out-bullshit. Rock has been nothing but loud chord mashing and screaming about serious issues. Gone where the times of fun and youth that shined throughout a generation. Yes, they where dark times indeed. Grunge, New Punk, Thrash, Emo. A sad state of events.

Recently, however. I've released that a number of bands such as The Darkness, Silvertide and other local bands(Cricket, others) in the area are taking a much more retro look to rock.A fun, exciting guitar-solo-just-kicked-you-in-the-mouth approach. I think the music scene has stagnated long enough. I think in the next few years, the afformentioned bands will be the next big thing in rock. These bands are the future of rock.

So I ask you all a question: Do you believe the return of REAL rock music is near? Or am I just flippin' nuts?

If you're referring to that classic hard rock one of a kind genre, the one with that certain unmistakeable vibe easily copied in tone, but rarely reproduced in essence ...you're flippin' nuts. The only way you're gonna get any of that is by catching the few oldsters left who still tour on occasion.

It was an era, and like all eras, it passed.

I'd still like to think that the essence of what rock is about is coming back.

    One can only hope.

In the meantime, I'm glad that bands like the Stones, AC/DC, Rush, Van Halen?, are going to be releasing new material soon

-MikeL, showing off that sharp wit of his.

"You may recognize some of these chemicals. Let's start with cyanide...The one the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use to commit mass murder in a Tokyo subway in May 1995...The same cyanide produced routinely--1.4 million tons per year--for use in the production of plastics, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and so on. It seems that those who put small amounts of cyanide in subways are terrorists. But those who produce it in mass quantities and contaminate broad reaches of soil, water, and air, killing countless living beings, are not terrorists, but rather capitalists, and are counted among the finest and most powerful people on the planet."

I believe that it just might. The only bands that appeared this decade that I've been listening to are Velvet Revolver, Audioslave, Saliva, Godsmack and Black Label Society. Not that big of a start but it's a start.

Last night, my friend, DLR kicked our asses and rocked like he was back in the '80's again! Now it is time to bring back that era and everyone can get back to normal. (see my review).

It's like the last 10 years have been The Empire Strikes Back, and now it's startin' to look like Return of The Jedi.

I hope that's not the case, because Star Wars just plain sucks, period.

Well, my best friend's son is 15. While he likes Slip Knot and Tool he really likes to listen to Van Halen and Dokken more. It was funny because I went down and stayed with them last New Years and he was playing BOBW and skipping the Sammy songs...but I digress. He's learning to play guitar and already plays bass. He's a big Zakk Wylde freak.
Then there's my nephew in Georgia, he's also 15 and plays guitar in his school's jazz band. He loves jazz and he loves guys like Tony McApline, Steve Vai, Greg Morse and George Lynch. There are lots of younger people who preffer the classic rock model and sound. That's why Velvet Revolver hit so big, they have an overall aproach that you don't get from younger bands. Sure, their music is on the darker side but those guys have actually lived the lyrics in their songs too.

I look at it this way, it can only get better.

    Well put...

I can only hope the return of "real rock" is short at hand. I do however, see signs of life with Waltham, Tesla and Velvet Revolver all in the mix. New meets old if you will. Rock is returning....

With the sad state fo affairs the industry is in (MTV, Radio, internet and record labels) It's hard to imagine a new act breaking through and changing the rock landscape.

Nobody's willing to bet on different sounding artists, when the same old bullshit is still selling, and it is. Anyone see Good Charlote or Sum 41's numbers lately? Sad....sad....sad.

We can all do our part and support our favorite Rock bands when they are in the area. That is the biggest difference we can make, by making the crowd bigger, people will see and hear the music we love and crave.....Support Live Music! Whether in a bar, a fest or a stadium....just GO!

Interesting theories floatin around here. I remember an interview that Lita did a few years back on a show about rock and she said that rock would be back cause people are tired of what's happenin in music today (or back then). She said that people missed havin a good time with their music. Her comments were definitely insightful, at least for me.

Today's music is a pretty sad state of affairs. There are a very few exceptions as somebody mentioned earlier with VR, Godsmack, Audioslave, etc. Maybe bands are gettin back to the basics of good 'ol rock'n roll????

    Well one can be optimistic!!

Rock, I don't think ever left. Why?

Thats why. If it wasn't for fans that actually dig good music and support it maybe rock would have left and we'd all be listening to crap. No bands will ever surpass that technical level that was VH. However, there's lots of new bands that are rockin:

    Thornley
    Bullmoose
    Silvertide
    Alterbridge
    Audioslave
    Rose Hill drive
    Velvet Revolver

just keep checkin out new bands, or old bands that are new to you.
