    What Era Are We In?

I think we would all agree that the late '80s to early '90s was the "hair-metal" era. In the early '90s, along came Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc., effectively killing "hair-metal" and suddenly we were in the grunge era. I'm not sure exactly when the grunge era ended, but I'd pin it shortly after Cobain killed himself. Pearl Jam is still playing, but is it grunge? It could probably be argued that after the grunge era, we went into the "boy band" era. I was proudly out of step with what was popular during this era. So perhaps the "boy band" era gave way to the "pop princess era", where I remained completely unfashionable. The "pop princess era" appears to be dying in a most undignified fashion (see the current state of Britney), so what musical era are we in?

Thinking about this while driving to work today, a more disturbing question reared it's head. Do we not recognize a current era of music because MTV is no longer playing videos? If that's the case, would we have had the "hair-metal" and "grunge" eras if not for MTV? Are we better off without the influence of MTV? Before you shout "YES!", consider what bands were brought to your attention by MTV. Would we ever have heard of Nirvana if not for MTV? If not, would we ever have heard of the Foo Fighters? Def Leppard traced their gains in popularity here in the U.S. back to markets that were getting MTV. DLR recognized the benefits of MTV and played 'em as masterfully as Eddie plays his guitar.

Since we're discussing this on a VH board, I'll go ahead and clarify my thoughts on that last sentence. VH had an enormous following pre-MTV. This board would most likely still be here even if MTV had never existed. But I would argue that VH positively exploded due to their exposure on MTV. Would "Jump" be permanently stamped on the public consciousness if not for the being broadcast into every living room with cable tv? That's a tough argument to prove, but I don't believe too much in coincidences. MTV allowed Roth to bring the part of his act that doesn't get captured in the studio to those that hadn't been to the live shows. MTV didn't bring us Van Halen, but they did make them bigger.

Please don't get too distracted by the Van Halen comments. They're really not the point. What musical era are we in? And just how much influence has MTV had on what we perceive as musical eras?
    The only adventures I regret
    are the ones I missed,
and the thought of all the pretty girls
    I never tried to kiss.
    -DLR

We are in the Punk/Emo/Indie Rock era, that's the style of the "rock" music dominating the airwaves today. Sad, but it's true.

Punk Rock? More like "Pop wannabe Punk by posing Punk" Rock. Avril, Green Day, Blink 182 and Sum 41. They wish they could be like The Sex Pistols or the Clash.

Honestly I have no clue what era this is. I don't listen to the radio anymore so I guess I'm out of the loop regarding what's being played. The only music I buy is old albums and new CD's by old bands. There are only a few newer bands that I follow. When I stopped listening to the radio it was because I was so fed up with the same, unoriginal crap being rotated on a daily basis. That's one of the problems--everyone sounds the same and can't separate themselves from the rest.

You know what's funny. Punk is more like Pop-Punk. I was listening to The Clash today.London Calling made me smile. The other day I heard a Good Charlotte song. It made me want to drink anti-freeze...

I found out the other day from a Good Charlotte fan that they're a Boy Band. The whole Pop/Punk/Goth look is just to make people think they have a style, when they indeed don't. Now if you excuse me, I need to support Anarchy in The U.K. Sid Vicious style.

I don't know how ANYBODY my age can stand some of the shitty music that's made today. In my opinion, there's only two modern bands that I can stand listening to - and that's Silvertide and CKY.

I loathe indie rock. It shouldn't even have the label "rock" attached to it. Why can't we get all of these indie/emo bands in a helicopter and fly them into a cliff?

    /end rant
