while I do love EARLY U2- they don't have half the talent of VH in ANY era.

I think current U2 is better than current Van Halen...but that's the first time that's happened.

actually, I do have to give props to the new U2 cd...it's great. BUT..... October, Boy, and Joshua Tree are U2's best cd's. Obviously I'm biased toward VH(naturally).

Why is it every so often someone has to start a thread comparing U2 to Van Halen - about the only thing they have in common is that they're both great bands that I love - other than that it's night and day. Might as well compare 'em to George Strait or Prince for all it's worth...

2 different bands that put out totally opposite music . but they have one thing in common . they both put on great shows your getting your monies worth from both bands. i love u2's early stuff and even the new music is still worthy. butt the one thing u2 has over vh . the press goes gaga for them all the time. and vh doesnt get that respect that often........

I don't think they're that dissimilar - Edge always struck me as a
minimalist Ed; very inventive in U2's pop structure where VH was rock.

That said, any conversation about numbers & $s is always a yawner.

Who cares? How many fucking records did Vanilla Ice sell. What could
it possibly mean other than 2 suckers born a minute.

    Welcome back, Van HALEN!!!!

I do think it is an interesting comparison, because at one point, VH were the biggest band in the world. Yet it is U2 that has lasted, and quite well, much better than any other rock band I can think of. I mean really, is there any other band that has done what they have? It's pretty amazing when you thinkg about it. I remember Dean DeLeo of STP once joking about how every young person who wants to start a band should get a healthy dose of the 4 Food Groups--The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and Led Zeppelin. Van Halen had the opportunity to become the 5th group. But really, in 2007, the only group I can think of that could extend that group to 5 is U2, and other than that, maybe the Doors.

U2 are definitely THE model for a huge, world wide band, and most bands, including Van Halen, could take a few notes from them. I mean, their music has stayed consistent, they (still!) make great albums, still have big singles, and somehow manage to be incredibly commercially viable, without their integrity slipping much, if, arguably, at all.

They have also managed to transcend countless musical trends and STILL be 'cool' to the 18-49 deomgraphic since they broke, not to mention many new children that likely listen to them, and many people, like my 60 year old parents, who do as well.

U2 have also found ways to 'sell' their music while remaining hip, choosing their affiliations wisely, like their commercial featuring Vertigo for Apple.

They also bounced back from a commercial failure (VH III anyone?) with Pop--an album I really like--by putting out their biggest album since Joshua Tree, All That You Can't Leave Behind.

One thing that I think is a good thing, but many people here may not, is how big of an influence Bono and the Edge have been on singers and guitarists. You hear singers and guitarists ALL over the radio who wear their influence on their sleeve.

I know this may be sac-religious to say, but I truly believe over the last 29 years (VH I was released in 1978, Boy in 1980), Edge's guitar playing has had a more LASTING impact than Eddies. Eddie's major influence ended in 1992, while if you turn on the radio today, you will undoubtedly hear a guitarist wearing his Edge influence on his sleeve (and probably just as many singers doing the same with Bono). I would imagine it could be frustrating to a guy like Eddie, an obviously much more skilled guitarist, that his influence, once the biggest thing since Jimi Hendrix, has not had the lasting impact of The Edge.

Anyways, both are great bands, but U2, IMO, is no comparison legacy-wise to VH. It's unfortunate, because Eddie was one of three artists that got me to pick up a guitar in the first place, but sadly, I think it is true.

Hey Billy, I started this thread asking about total albums sales, not trying to compare what they have in common.

Lovemachine gives great food for thought as well.

I tried to go to the RIAA and count up the albums, but they have changed their database results. They used to tell you exactly how many times platinum an album has gone, but now they don't, it just gives each certification as "multi-platinum". So unfortunately, you don't know the exact numbers anymore. One could assume that each certification is another million, but that is not always the case.

The RIAA has it at 56.5 million for VH and 50 million for U2.
