Default I Know why DIVER DOWN was recorded

I think all of us here in the forums can agree that after watching the VH dvd "VAN HALEN : The early Years"......if you heard correctly, Van Halen used to know 200 cover songs that they played during the backyard parties and after 4 all original albums(besides Ice Cream man,on VH1).....I think Dave thought it might be a good idea to try to get back psychologically with how they were before they got huge???....Maybe to get back to the roots???...Maybe hence the first track on Diver.....Where Have All The Good Times Gone?????...last track...HAPPY TRAILS?????...That was also a favorite they did long before they got top bill.
    ...just a little opinion...........

I'll buy a little of that...

If my memory serves me properly, I believe that they released Pretty Woman with no expectations of it being on a record. The single did very well, and they were encouraged to get into the studio right away....I'm not going to say the well was running dry, but the boys had been touring and releasing albums non-stop...they were probably tired, and wanted to just hurry up and get it over with...in some ways..

Also Ted Templeman was a fan of covers...he thought if you cover a hit, 1/2 the work is done for you...I don't necessarily think any of this was bad...Diver Down has incredible covers and originals...I just think all these things played a part in how the album evolved.

and don't forget You Really Got Me, and You're no Good...covers way before Diver Down...again, I think Ted thought it was a good idea for the band to do covers..because of the aformentioned "hit" theory...but also it was cool to see how Eddie would play other people's songs on his guitar and make them better and more updated sounding.

You are right to some extent. It reminded me of some footage of Dave I've seen speaking to the press, I think after the US Festival, going from memory he says, "You see you gotta understand that the Van Halen cover songs, everything we did was a cover song was something we did for the bar scene man, the clubs. We used to play that shit 5 times a night. Instead for the dance contest and we'd play it 6 times a night. Stuff like 'Pretty Woman'. If you listen to 'Pretty Woman' you notice I forgot about 12 bars from the original song."
Bobby Cohn: Who's going to be at Waynestock?
Wayne Campbell: Um, uh...Aerosmith & Pearl Jam!
Garth Algar: Ha ha ha ha ho!
    Bobby: Who else?
    Garth: Uh, me...and...and Wayne...
    Wayne: ...and uh...VAN HALEN!!!
Garth: Wow. Van Halen. Who else?
    Bobby: Yeah, who else?
Wayne: Uh, an old man fashioning a kayak out of a log?

I think the following is the best reasoning I have read in regards to the recording of Diver Down, it is from www.classicvanhalen.com.

Van Halen's fifth record, released April, 1982. At the conclusion of the "Fair Warning" tour in December 1981, and after five years of constant road work, the members of Van Halen were scheduled to begin their first real vacations. To ensure the band's commercial visibility, they recorded "(Oh) Pretty Woman" in January, 1982. Upon its release, the single began to shoot up the charts and Warner Bros. demanded an album to capitalize on the unexpected success. With little new material prepared, and much to Eddie's chagrin, the band worked up a number of cover songs and recorded this album in just 12 days. This album also marked the first time the band had recorded anywhere but Sunset Sound. Amigo Studios in Los Angeles was the only place available on such short notice.
Released a month after it was completed, Diver Down hit #3 in the States and #36 in the UK. This became the band's most successful album thus far, selling over 3 million copies, and becoming their fifth multi-platinum release.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

diver down was also released because of the lack of sales and hits from fair warning.at the time it was there least succesful album and the record company was worried.pretty woman was meant to hold the fans together and then it snowballed from there.regardless of what it was,it paved the way for 1984.

I'll buy that for a dollar!!

Sounds about right, from what I read last night.

That book was pretty cool, cause they all talked about their club days and being discovered at the Starwood, about all the music they played.

Pretty damn good read on my fave subjects!!

It's a huge book, not in terms of pages, but the size of the pages. It's a wire-bound book I picked up during my school days in San Francisco. It came out in 1984 and has a lot of great pics, their early days, their albums (yes the 6-pack)and about each band member. I believe the book is titled simply Van Halen. I'll have to check tho cause I usually blast past the cover page and get to all the pics!!

Of course the quotes from Dave alone are well worth it!! Great pics of Edward in his younger days.

Semi offtopic... I've decided that The Full Bug is one of the
bands most underrated songs. I've grown to appericate the
    non hits alittle more lately.

Could This Be Magic is another one. Everytime I hear that
D@mn song now I bust out laughing. It seems funny for
some reason. Used to hate it, now it seems funny.

I heard a rumor, while I was in high school, that Ed had writers block around that time also. Has anybody else ever heard this?
