But in the immediate practical future, try going to Trend Micro and downloading and running the CWShredder (and after you do that you might try their free HouseCall scan - it sometimes picks up stuff that Norton misses).

Y'know, Mike - if you turn on enough people to Macs that they become popular, people will start writing viruses for them, too!

Oddly enough, I'm not too worried about that. It's been a good 12 years since I've had a virus on one of my Macs--that was back when Apple likely had 10-12% marketshare. They're pretty far from that now. With how OS X has been touted as not having any viruses, I'm thinking that the challenge of writing real spyware/viruses for them is a bigger draw than the raw numbers. It's not as though people haven't tried writing a virus for OS X, either. The best they could come up with is a user-iniated script. Hell, I can do that, and so can anyone else that's somewhat versed in Unix. The nice, comfortable fact is that there aren't any such problems on a Mac. I spend enough time futzing with that sort of thing at work. I don't want to do it at home.

A couple weeks ago a co-worker had a problem with his home PC. He says he shut it down "quickly," whatever that means. I tend to think it meant he was looking at porn and his wife walked in. Anyway, it wouldn't come back up. So he calls Dell, and spends $50 for them to not give him a solution. He hires some local wannabe to retrieve the data off of the drive. The jerk just rips two pins off of the drive (how in the hell is that possible?!), and charges my co-worker $100 for the trouble. So he takes it to Geek Squad, and they charge him $75 to tell him he's got two broken pins and that there's nothing they can do. He buys a new PC for $1,000, and immediately loads it up with every piece of anti-virus/anti-spyware/firewall/bloatware BS he can get his grubby little hands on. He also spends a bundle on having Geek Squad connect his HP printer to it, which apparently took them four, count'em, four, days!

Anyways, that's when he calls me. He couldn't do a damn thing on the Internet because of all the shit he loaded to prevent malicious things from keeping him from doing a damn thing on the Internet. Of course, he didn't want to listen, and is very upset that he's spent so much money to make his new computer inoperable. Such is life, eh? Why any normal consumer would want to go through all that I have no idea. Life is just easier when you simply don't have to worry about it.

Oh, and I did manage to get all of the data off his broken drive. It's not too hard to fix simple things like missing pins.

That works for some things, but not all things. I've switched half of my labs over to Firefox from IE. In my own personal use I've seen many fewer issues with Firefox than IE, but in the labs I was surprised to find that it only cut problems by about 50%. I'm glad about that, but I'd suspected even more dramatic results. The difference is in the behavior of the users, I guess. The other part of it is that the web browser is only one of many avenues in which Windows is vulnerable.

Billy, one thing I forgot to mention was that marketshare and viral problems aren't always connected. Back when I had an Amiga I had more problems with viruses than I've had with any other platform--including Windows!

Firefox is light years ahead of IE. For anti-spyware I use Ad-Aware and Spybot.

I found this helpful. Thnx. Norton had missed a bit of stuff on my laptop.

Firefox and Linux - an unshakable combination, and you don't need expensive Apple hardware to do it

I'm a big fan of Microsoft's anti-spyware package myself. Even in beta it's been very trouble-free.

Note that Spyware Blaster doesn't remove any spyware currently
on your computer.... It just stops most of it from getting on there.
