Default Who had a bigger influence on music- Van Halen or U2?

I'm currently debating this with my boss. He is on U2's side for for whatever reason. I think most of us would side with VH. Please give me some evidence to support my agrument- examples, press, anything on the internet. I really want to prove him wrong. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. We "argue" about music and VH all the time- we have a lot of fun with it

I'm not entirely sure that's an argument you can win.

Of course we here in these hallowed halls will take the Halen side, but it's hard to deny U2's influence and sustenance across genres and pop culture. They are respected by virtually all sects of musicians.

Instrumentally it's Van Halen by miles and miles...not even close.

I've never heard of anyone really that inspired by the drum or bass guitar work of U2, and only minimally of The Edge's guitar work. And also, I doubt many look at Bono as a vocal influence.

Van Halen completely changed the face of rock guitar...we all know that. U2, while being perhaps the most popular band in the world, really hasn't been that ground breaking. As a whole U2 has inspired a lot of artists, but there are many more legions of musicians influenced by Ed. Heck, a whole generation of axemen.

I'm talking strictly from a musical standpoint only. Vh's music was revolutionary and unique- can you say the same about "Boy", "October", or "War" ???

    I can't chime in because I think U2 sucks.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

Van Halen= One of the most emulated bands.

    U2= Same thing...kinda.

It all goes down to who you like the most. And I'm going with Van Halen

Just to poke fun at U2:

it can be argued that van halen created 80's metal...a whole genre...can't say that about U2

they asked ed one time who he thought the best guitarist is or was. Ed's reply was (musical theory not musical fact)! i think this applies here also. It just really all depends on who and what ya like. You cant take anything away from either band, so why waste your time debating it. Personaly i love both bands, but my musical taste is more towards vh. but u2 has done somthing that vh hasn't. and thats kept its original line up. and has been doing it without delay for years and you have to respect that. My heart is still with vh though.

True, but they did influence the metal genre.

That's not necessarily a good thing about the 80s' metal.

I remember a few years ago, under VH's bio page on Rolling Stone. com, it called VH something like :"carrying Zeppelin's torch, and the only band to come close" or something like that. They've changed that summary since then though

You can't deny that most of your hair metal bands were trying to copy the Van Halen formula.
