Default which album do you thinks better, 5150 or OU812?

they must be the two softest albums of VH. with all those keyboard songs.

I'll go with 5150. Fun, fun, fun album.

Someone wake me when this snoozefest is over....It makes me sleepy when we constantly rehash the same shit every three weeks.

For the record...haaaaaaa, get it record?????? I liked OU812 better, minus When It's Love and Feels So Good (which reminds me of my girlfriend in my senior year) the album was a lot harder & gruffer. Not to mention better produced than 5150.

    Back to my nap.

I'll chime in any way before this gets moved.

5150 - as per my profile. The new band's first sound were unforgettable to me. Also, my Junior-Senior years of high school. I think we all look most fondly back at the music from that time of our lives.

Yup, 5150 gets the sentimental high school vote.

But OU812 has better tunes overall.

If only it had some remastered deep end.

    I agree and disagree

5150 for sure was a high school favorite...

5150 is better all the way around. Not a bad song on it IMO. I even dig "Inside"

Ou812 is great, but I still don't like FWYS and Source of Infection. Yikes.... But I was focusing on the music in SOI and Ed and Al are jammin like Mofo's on that tune. But the lyrics....

    Both need a hearty re-master....

ALL the way around? I dunno. Those three rock-ballads kick up the soft factor. And when you toss in Inside, there's 4 tracks right off the bat that aren't exactly your garden variety kick ya in the balls Halen. But, Good Enough, BOBW, Summer Nights, Get Up, and 5150 are classic humdingers and easily make up for the rest of it. Plus it's got the whole landmark factor - first Sam era VH, first post-Dave VH, mid - eighties high school graduation startin' a new phase deal.

OU812's got the worst Sam era VH song ever, IMO, unfortunately (good ol' When it's Cheese), and there's Feels so Good, not a horrible ballad as ballads go, but a ballad nonetheless. And I'll grant ya Infection as a weak spot as well. But FWYS is a catchy diddy in the vein of Could this Be Magic or Big Bad Bill, a little funkster Halen...and the ballbreakers, Cabo, AFU, Mine all Mine, Sucker, Black and Blue...pow!

And I still think I'm among a very small and select cult of Halen-nobs that thinks Apolitical Blues is a sweet little cover. I like when Ed gets bluesy.

And just as an aside, what's the deal with those Sam era 'Side 2' lead-off tracks? Is it just me, or do you guys kinda lump all these mentally as 'cut-to-the-quick' sorta tunes? I'm talking about Source of Infection, In and Out, and Aftershock, of course (BOBW being the exception).

For some reason, I tend to find SOI and Aftershock running the same gauntlet. Dunno why. But even so, Aftershock's the clear leader in rocking, naturally, as it's got that Balance flavah.

I love both records, but always have a soft spot for OU812 as it was the first CD I ever bought.

5150 does have a crisper sound and sharper production for sure, but I always felt that OU812 was meant to have a darker, murkier sound more like say Fair Warning.

Ask me today, it's 5150. Ask me tomorrow, it may be OU812. It all depends on the mood I'm in. I will say I have multiple copies of both.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

Now the new David-Lee-Roth-Van Halen album, “Tokyo Dome In Concert,” is available for purchase, and it’s super, super, super, super, super, super, crazy bad. - Doug Elfman
