The right to bear arms does not seem to be such a bad thing after all.

Chart one up to eminent domain or however you spell it.

I just always get a kick when someone suggests that an armed citizenry will someday be necessary to change our government. The idea that some buffoons with handguns can (and more importantly, will) stand up against a trained, disciplined professional military (made up of their own countrymen) is pretty silly. Much more than that, however, is both the absurdity and complacency that's implicit in the suggestion. The notion that our government--which we put in place--will be taken over by some sort of evil force is pure comic book material. A responsible citizen isn't a citizen waiting to revolt against a bad government. A responsible citizen is a citizen that helps ensure that a bad government never comes to power. In our system, that doesn't involve piddly little handguns.

The citizenry easily outnumbers the military. Considering the hardware at the military's disposal, I believe that would even things. But that is not the real issue...
I believe the 2nd Amendment is more of a philosophical than practical issue. Gun ownership gives the citizenry a fighting chance (philosophically speaking) and lawmakers, with that chance in mind, will govern/legislate more responsibly. At which end of the barrel would you be more apt to "do the right thing"?

As for economic disparity among the classes, it exists in all forms of government. That being said, make mine a free, capitalist government. If you feel you are being 'eaten' by the rich then you are simply proving Darwin correct. To try to equalize that situation with a gun would be stealing.

Career politicians must go. The only problem with this country's government is it is now made up of men/women whose job it is to run it. Governing is a privilege granted by the people. Not a job. Sure, there is a job to do while in office but too much time in the position brings on aspects of entrepreneurialism. Profit. Deal-making. Capitalism should be left to the people, not the government.

Don't take the 'Darwin' comment to heart. If the sharks found a way to hunt/kill seals unnaturally (read: illegally), the shark would ultimately die due to starvation. Government's duty is to stop the illegal tactics of the Tycos, Adelphias, and Enrons. The duty is to punish the wrong, not guide the right; to protect the few from the many. Read that last sentence carefully. It'll trip ya if you have socialism on the brain.

Here's to hoping this thread maintains decency...

Getting back to what this thread was about...today's Supreme Court decision was actually a step in the right direction...it gives state courts the ability to rule on what pieces of property will be appropriated by the government and used to redevelop blighted areas and not having their hands tied by the federal courts...Listen i'm about as Libratarian (spell check guess i can't be one if i can't spell it) but in this case taking peoples property is really needed especially in big cities...i live in cleveland the amount of abandoned houses and vacant lots in this city is awfully large, and unfortunately for the most part the local courts and governments have had tremendous problems (politically) in trying to acquire this land that is not being used for anything but garbage dumping, drug dealing, etc....

I clerk for a judge that handles many housing issues, we deal on a daily basis, with land owners who for whatever reason do not tend to their property, they let it get run down and the neighborhood slowly turns to shit...Cleveland has lost its neighborhoods because these landowners have allowed the houses to turn into run-down blighted eyesores...this decision gives local government the oppurtunity to spur on the socio-economic and enviromental growth and revitalization of neighborhoods...it helps underprivileged lower-middle class people live in safer homes and communities...Redevelopment and rehibilatation is soo important to cities like cleveland, detroit, cincy, youngstown...and many more throughout the midwest and the rest of the United States...this releases the state courts from the handcuffs of federal courts who did not allow property to be appropriated by the local government unless it was clearly for a "public use".

If anything this will help lower income people and families so they don't have to sit their and live next to an abandoned home, in which the home owner(usually upper middle to upper class) has decided to no longer invest time/money in the area...it gives these people an oppurtunity to get rid of the drug dealers an garbage that is living next to them as their children walk to school...Redevelopment sponsored by the government is a good thing for Cleveland, i can only speak for my town...and as loathe as i am to defend any Supreme Court judgement that gives "Big Brother" government more power...Housing/Land development is sorely in need of reformation in this country...

I guess some people haven't noticed the killing power of our military today, there is no way in hell a bunch of retarded civilians could stop anything if the full power of the Govt/Military opposes it, it's just not going to happen.

If that's the angle you gun nuts are taking then I have been sorely over estimating you guys.

Given that they had recently finished fighting a war with militia as their main source of manpower (they did not have a professional, standing army as we do today) and that a good many people had to hunt in order to feed themselves, I would say that philosophical ideas most definitely took a back seat to practical issues.

Gun ownership gives the citizenry a fighting chance (philosophically speaking) and lawmakers, with that chance in mind, will govern/legislate more responsibly.
None of which was on the minds of the framers, even if a person does believe that such a chance exists. The 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with encouraging, allowing, or permitting armed rebellion against the government. The Whiskey Rebellion (which occurred in the time of and was settled, in part, by the framers of the Constitution) is pretty fair proof that just because citizens feel a government is unjust, they do not have a right to take up arms against it. The Constitution itself provides the framework for both preventing an unjust government, and redressing an unjust government. Those involve an active, engaged citizenry--not an armed and rebellious citizenry.

As term limits... your logic doesn't hold. That would expel all politicians from their positions, even if they're quite good at doing what people have selected them to do. Poor politicians are the result of lazy citizens, and the solution isn't to try and find some legislative solution to a behavioral problem.

Nope. That didn't involve citizens revolting against what they viewed as a bad government. The Civil War dealt primarily with states' rights, specifically with whether or not they had the right to leave the Union.
