The *FH* memorial Entertainment news thread.

Our Hall of Famer "FH" needed to take a much needed leave of absence, and I believe he will be coming back in a few months, so in the meantime lets honor this great Van Halen fan with an entertainment news thread.

If you got some cool entertainment news you found out or spotted on the web, post it here!

Underdog Flying onto the Big Screen
    Source: Variety June 20, 2005

Walt Disney Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment are putting the final touches on a deal to bring the classic TV cartoon Underdog to the big screen as a live-action feature, reports Variety.

The trade says Disney has high hopes for the property as a possible franchise for its Walt Disney Pictures label. Producers are aiming to start preparing in November for shoot starting in January in Canada, possibly in Vancouver.

The tongue-in-cheek Underdog series, created by Buck Biggers and Chet Stover, made its debut in 1964 on NBC and ran until 1973. The character was an unlikely superhero: a beagle who sheds his milquetoast identity of Shoeshine Boy to become a caped superdog who speaks in rhymed couplets. Wally Cox provided his voice.

In the feature script, by Joe Piscatella and Craig A. Williams, a diminutive hound named Shoeshine gets superpowers after a lab accident. When he's adopted by a 12-year-old boy, the two form a bond around the shared knowledge that Shoeshine is really Underdog.

The characters of mad scientist Simon Barsinister and Underdog's love interest, Sweet Polly Purebred, are expected to be included in the movie. A real dog will be used for the title character, and CGI enhancements will be added.

Fraser Hints at Third Mummy Movie
    Source: MonkeyPeaches June 20, 2005

Branden Fraser was in Shanghai this weekend and mentioned that a script for The Mummy 3 exists, but he was not allowed to announce it officially. Fraser expects part of Universal's third installment to be shot in China/Asia.

Fraser previously starred in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns opposite Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Oded Fehr, Patricia Velasquez and The Rock.

Fraser also announced he will do a movie called Children of Guangxi in China, with director Roger Spottiswoode (The 6th Day, Tomorrow Never Dies) and the producer of Cocoon.

Set in Shanghai in 1937, the film centers on a journalist who resisted to pay attention to the Japanese invasion of China and later had a change of heart after witnessing the horror of the Nanjing Massacre. Later, he led some 50 to 60 war orphanages to safety.

The script is by Paul Haggis (Million Dollar Baby). Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh may also star.

Church Drops Spider-Man 3 Villain Hints
    Source: Abysstare June 17, 2005

Spider-Man 3 star Thomas Haden Church has dropped a few hints about which villain he is playing. 'Abysstare' says...

On page 57 of this week's double issue Entertainment Weekly (#826/827):

EW: After reminding the world he could really act in Sideways, the Oscar nominee will play an undisclosed, top secret villain in 2007's Spider-Man 3. How about a hint?

THC: "He's a horse of many colors."

EW: There are horses in Spider-Man?

THC: "Let's just say he's an amorphous collection of protons, electrons, and neutrons, of different colors."

There's some more, but that's the only part with any clues.

Gellar & Nispel Team for Alice
    Source: Variety June 21, 2005

Sarah Michelle Gellar (The Grudge) is set to star in and Marcus Nispel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) will direct video game adaptation Alice for Universal Pictures, says Variety. Based on a twisted take of the Lewis Carroll classic, the project was originally developed at Dimension.

The fractured fairy tale, adapted by Erich and Jon Hoeber, picks up Alice after her home has been destroyed and her family killed. The sole survivor of the disaster, she returns to a dark and threatening Wonderland where she must confront her fears before returning to her normal life.

The game was originally created by American McGee for Electronic Arts.

Arad Reveals New Marvel Movie Secrets
    Source: MTV June 21, 2005

MTV has posted a great interview with Marvel Studios chairman and CEO Avi Arad. He discusses all of the Marvel movie adaptations in the works and reveals some new bits on various projects. For example, there's this part about the Magneto "X-Men" spin-off:

"I will always want Ian McKellen," Arad says. "There's no way for me to think of not walking into the story through him — through something happening now, and then going back there. Ian is an ambassador for this, and he needs to be there."

Definitely good news for the "X-Men" movie fans. Arad also reveals that Nicolas Cage will face a tidal wave in Ghost Rider:

"I remember seeing 'The Perfect Storm,' how the whole wave was CGI. You're going to see something [similar] in 'Ghost Rider.' " While he reveals that Ghost Rider will, at some point, be entirely submerged, Arad vows that the infamous grinning skull will continue to flame on. "Nothing can extinguish it," he smiles. "It's hellfire."

He also mentioned that Dylan Baker will return as Dr. Curt Connors (aka The Lizard) for Spider-Man 3. MTV says that "the seeds are apparently being planted for Spidey to also someday take on a superhumanly strong, green-scaled monster."

About Captain America, he mentioned the following:

"There is a director who should make 'Silver Surfer' — he is mentally committed to it. He's doing another movie now. What's most important to me about this guy, first, is that he's incredible with visuals. But he's also a spiritual guy, a Zen Buddhist." Arad also confirms that the enormous planet devourer Galactus will be in the movie, but chances are he'll be all-CGI. "Galactus is a force of nature, not a being. That's all I'm saying."

Latifah & de Matteo Voicing Ice Age 2
Source: Latino Review June 21, 2005

In an interview with Latino Review, John Leguizamo revealed that Queen Latifah and Drea de Matteo (Joey, The Sopranos) will voice characters in 20th Century Fox's Ice Age 2: The Meltdown.

"I'm not allowed to divulge a lot but I do sing in it," Leguizamo said. "I still play the sloth, and Drea de Matteo plays my girlfriend in it and Queen Latifah plays Ray Romano's girlfriend ...she's a mammoth and Drea is a sloth."

He added that the film is supposed to test in September. It will be released on March 31st. The 2002 original, featured the fast talking but dim sloth named Sid (Leguizamo), a moody woolly mammoth named Manny (Ray Romano), a devilish saber-toothed tiger named Diego (Denis Leary), and an acorn-crazy saber-toothed squirrel known as Scrat. They came together in a quest to return a human infant to his father.

de Matteo previously starred together with Leguizamo in the Assault on Precinct 13 remake.

    Reyes Helming Doubt for Regency
Source: The Hollywood Reporter June 21, 2005

Franc. Reyes will write and direct the remake of Beyond a Reasonable Doubt for Regency Enterprises, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The 1956 original, directed by Fritz Lang, starred Dana Andrews, Joan Fontaine, Sidney Blackmer, Arthur Franz, Philip Bourneuf and Ed Binns.

The story centers on a newsman who intentionally frames himself for a murder he didn't commit in order to point out the dangers of circumstantial evidence and to expose an overzealous district attorney who has manipulated evidence in the past to gain convictions.

Rodney Dangerfield Biopic in the Works
    Source: Variety June 21, 2005

Producers Howard and Karen Baldwin have acquired life story rights from late Rodney Dangerfield's widow and plan to develop and produce a biopic through their Baldwin Entertainment Group, reports Variety. The film will be based at least in part on "It's Not Easy Bein' Me," Dangerfield's 2004 autobiography.

The Baldwins were producers on Ray and Sahara and recently announced plans to partner with Robert Redford's Wildwood Enterprises on a Jackie Robinson/Branch Rickey biopic, with Redford portraying Rickey.

The Baldwins are also producing an adaptation of The Legacy of Luna, based on Julia Butterfly Hill's bestseller about living for two years in a redwood to prevent a lumber company from cutting the tree.

WB Rekindles Young Men and Fire
    Source: Variety June 21, 2005

According to Variety, Warner Bros. has rekindled Young Men and Fire by setting Tod C. Williams to direct the film. His cousin, Tod H. Williams, is adapting the Norman Maclean book. The studio is aiming for a spring 2006 start date in Montana.

The book, by the "A River Runs Through It" author, is about a 1949 Montana forest fire that, stoked by a rare combination of winds and explosions, produced flames the equivalent of 40 stories tall that moved 50 mph.

Battling it was a group of smoke jumpers who parachuted into the conflagration. A total of 13 men died in the blaze.
