Default Van Halen the band should have been called, "David Lee Roth".

Eddie would have never made it withOUT David Lee Roth.

If Dreams was the world's introduction to the mighty Van Halen... then Eddie would have been long forgotten back in 1986... just like the group STARSHIP.

    Think about it.

Sammy fucking sucks, and did nothing for the band... without having the 10X platinum , "1984" as a stepping stool.

Van Halen was like a glorious mansion up until 1984, and when Sammy joined.... that mansion turned into a CRACKHOUSE!!!!

    DAVE OR THE GRAVE BABY!!!

Imagine a world with no "eruption" or any of the first six albums.

    Just the Hagar era...

Van Halen would be long forgotten by now.... like Britney Fox.... white lion... or enuff z nuff!

Now on the other hand... let's say Sammy Hagar recorded the first Van Halen album in 1978.

It probably would have been disco music.

Yeah, then Dave could have sued them when they reunited last year without him!

VH did rise to fame and prominence due in part to DLR, but the fact that VH (with Sammy) can reunite for an arena tour and David Lee Roth can't stage one as a solo artist speaks volumes about who needs who ultimately.

DLR traded in a music career for a short-lived big band Vegas stint and EMT training. He got his solo career off to a great start with Eat 'Em And Smile and the superior Skyscraper, but lost the plot soon after that.

Those are good points, Warfy. Another jab to ruffle the local feathers. Unfortunately, we all like Roth era VH as much as your esteemed self, and some of us a damned sight more, I suspect. As an offhand observation, I'll just add that virginal albino kiddies who never saw Roth VH live hardly deserve the title "I Am the Purest Rothtard of All Time."

Sadly, it's blatantly obvious Ed didn't need Roth to succeed in the music business. He would've played with somebody and gotten paid bucks to do it, that's a guarantee. That said, it's even more redundant to assert that which needs no explanation - Roth era Van Halen is da shizznit. The one-two punch of Ed's finger skill and Roth's lyricism and fandango was a one of a kind deadly duo which will never be matched.

Now back to your regularly scheduled bait and switch trolling.

All I'm saying, is that I don't think anyone besides Dave could have led the mighty Van Halen to prominence.

Van Halen would have failed without any other singer.

But I guess we'll never know that.

Anyways, I know Dave's career has been shit commercially for quite some time now. I hated when he went to Vegas, and I hate it even more when he became an EMT and did that halfassed Boston Pops show.... i'm sorry... but I think Dave was way out of place shaking his ass and jumpin around in a lounge singer outfit.... while redneck/ mullet headed carnival spectators sang along with the words to, "jump".

    Now back to the discussion...

What kind of impression or musical landmark would Eddie Van Halen have made, if 5150 was his first album.... and album filled with cheesy synth, sappy love songs and watered down solos?

I'm sorry but Eddie Van Halen was just a band member of his solo act.

It's just like what Dave said...

"When people think of Eddie Van Halen, they think of the person.... sort of like when people think of Van Halen.... they think of David Lee Roth"

5150 never would've happened in 1977. Signs of the times, man. VH wasn't the only hard rockin' band that went pop in the mid 80s to appeal to a wider audience. Um, nobody that I can think of stayed true to their roots. It's a music business. Even the Kinks went New Wave in the 80s. It's all part of the deal. You gots your Skyscrapers, you gots your OU812s, your 80s heyday. Eric Clapton remade After Midnight for a glossy Miller beer commercial. Aerosmith left their rocks and went on vacation. And so on, and so on.

As I've said before, blame the soulless masses and the industry, not the artist. I miss classic hard rock too. It was the best era, and it's gone now. Stupid masses.

Well I can agree with you, that alot of bands changed their style and cheesed out in the mid to late 80's... but the main difference between OU812 and Skyscraper is that you can still get alot of attitude with DLR underneath the pop beats... whereas Sammy Hagar all you get in a fucking CARBOARD CUTOUT onstage... with about as much charisma as a fucking tic-tac.
