    Default Marshall or Crate?

Okay I have narrowed down my choicesfor a half-stack

The Marshall MG100HDFX/MG412 Slant Cab Package

    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...se_pid/482807/

    or

    The Crate GT1200H/G412SL Half Stack

    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...se_pid/487796/

Which one can I get the brown sound out of. Now I am getting this for a graduation gift. So I will have a very hard time asking my parents for a 5150.

I hate to tell you this, but you are probably going to eventually be disappointed with either of those amps. And do you really need a half stack? Are you going to be playing live yet? You won't be able to get a 100W or 120W amp above 1 or 2 on the master in the house, unless your parents are deaf. For $500-$700, you could get a decent smaller combo amp.

If you really want one of those two amps though, and you want an EVH sound, I don't know what to tell you. Sorry.

Just curious but which one would u buy?

And what tube amp would u recommend? Not that I need another one. I have a old Peavey TKO60 or something like that.

I wouldn't even consider either one. I would look for a good tube combo amp or shell out some cash for a Blue Voodoo or Marshall tube amp.

With all due respect, I have to agree with others. There's probably no denying you are likely dead set on getting a large amp & 4x12, and we don't want to rob you of the pleasure of owning your first 1/2 stack. However, for the price that you will pay for these 1/2 stacks, and then the loss in resale value after you realize you need to move up--AGAIN--you could have paid for a 5150 1/2 stack.

You can get a used 5150 combo in your price range.

A buddy of mine has one of THESE. It's plenty loud and he can dial in just about any sound he wants (although, to be honest, he's not an EVH wannabe so I doubt he's ever tried to get the brown sound).

If you're looking for the EVH sound, you can get that out of just about any amp. Solid-state or tube. Don't let tubes be the most important factor in your sound if you're just an beginner to intermediate player playing in your basement. Unless you're doing gigs or recording, who really cares? It's all in your EQ and fingers anyway.

Check out http://www.jfrocks.com. That guy uses a Crate FX combo and holds the key to EVH's sound just as good as anybody I've ever seen try and he's solid-state all the way.

Yeah, I've got my choices. I own 2 Marshall JCM 200 100 watt heads, a 5150 II and a Roland Jazz Chorus and I use them all when I'm gigging but like I said, solid-state or tube, I don't think it really matters unless you're that advanced or that picky about your sound. I've seen guys make a shitty little Peavey 10 watt combo sound like a million bucks.

I find the solid-state Marshall's to be a little on the bright side for my taste and I don't mind the Crates all that much. They're pretty versatile.

    Just my opinion.
