    Default Van Halen 3

Hey whats up. If there is one thing that I don't understand about the Van Halen rock n roll ride is why Van Halen 3 was so poorly received. Was it because it was different ? In my opinion, Van Halen III was one of the best albums that Van Halen has put out. Maybe people couldn't handle a third different singer to the group. Gary Cherone wrote lyrics that were so much better than his precedessors'. His vocal range was much better than either Dave or Sam. And the VH III tour was one of the best tours that they did, surpassing the recent Best of Both Worlds Tour. Eddie went in a new direction musically, creating some of the best material in his career. What about "Without You"? Awesome. "Once" is close to the top on my list of the all time favorite Van Halen songs. Although many people hate it "How Many Say I" was a representation of Eddie's musical journey. I liked it. I could go on and on but if you have to say that there were many good if not great songs on that album. Bands in my opinion need to change musically in order to prevent themselves from burning out in the long run. I tip my hat to Van Halen for making such a great album. I wish Gary Cherone was still in the band, for the new songs by Sammy are no where as close to the level VH III was at. Feel free to give your opinion.

I still think it's a good album, and I like it better than 2 other VH albums. It would've been interesting to hear another album from them.

"You may recognize some of these chemicals. Let's start with cyanide...The one the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use to commit mass murder in a Tokyo subway in May 1995...The same cyanide produced routinely--1.4 million tons per year--for use in the production of plastics, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and so on. It seems that those who put small amounts of cyanide in subways are terrorists. But those who produce it in mass quantities and contaminate broad reaches of soil, water, and air, killing countless living beings, are not terrorists, but rather capitalists, and are counted among the finest and most powerful people on the planet."

Me three, except the comment about the vocal range of Gary compared to Sam. I think the bad reception of the album had everything to do with it being 'different'. That said, it's the one in my player right now.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

I agree with the original post. Cept the vocal range part. Afraid Sam's got him beat on that one. And Dave got him beat on lyrics because Dave's a clever motherfucker. But as far as the album goes, of their best. A great album that never gets old for me.

Dirty Water Dog is an incredible song, Without You and One I Want are good. The rest I don't listen to that much on VH III. Anyway this topic is better suited for VH Songs/Albums. So I will move it there.

Thanks Travis, I though someone ( ) would close it, it's been a while since we last had a thread on the album alone.

How can you not listen to Once and Year to the Day?

The solo on YTTD gets played in my head often.

It's brilliant!! I remember staring at the screen as an idiot for the whole 8 minutes while it was playing (with some music plugin drawing some ambient lines or sorta), it just opens some new dimensions when you hear it. Well at least when I do, but I've heard dozens of dozens guitarists since then, and this solo still remains on the top for me.

well, I was going to say it is better than most of Eddie's other solos, but that's not right(objectivity and all that shit).
I WILL say that right now it is my favorite Eddie solo.
And that is a BIG statement.
As a matter of fact sixstring and I had a discussion about this very topic this weekend(if he remembers).
