    Question about settings

I've been playing guitar for what seems a lifetime, but don't know squat about the "electronics" part of amps and cabs. I have a Line 6 Flextone II amp and cab, and it sounds pretty good. I just turn it on, tweak the eq's until I find a sound I'm happy with. What I don't understand is in the back it has different "ohms" settings (4, 8, 16). What does that do and how does it affect my overall sound? I've left it on 16 since I got it some few years ago and just felt compelled to figure out something I didn't know about ( I never claimed to know everything)
Any input would be very helpful. Gracias

Ohms is the impedance of the speaker cabinet. If the cabinet is 8 ohms, set the amp to 8 ohms. multiple speakers/cabinets can get tricky mathematically so just post here and we'll help ya.

This is not a setting to tweak. If the cab is 16 ohms, set the amp to 16 ohms. You don't want to turn your amp into a Class X heater.

Hmmm...I have never seen a speaker cabinet with switchable impedance. What kind is it?

It's a Line 6 as well. You can switch between 2,4 Mono or 8,16 stereo. That's why I was wondering if switching between the ohms would affect my sound any.

with multiple speakers... some cabs give the switching cabability of setting the speakers into two sets for stereo if you have two heads. this one also allows you to switch the speakers in different combos of series and parallel.

two 8 ohm speakers in series is a 16ohm load. two 8 ohm speakers in parallel is a 4 ohm load.. you can imagine all the possiblities of switching if you have 4 speakers.

but you should keep them matching. drawing to much current from your amp because the speaker load is not enough can fry it

Right now I have my amp set at 16 ohms and set on parallel (it gives me the option of parallel/series), and my cab (which has 4 speakers) set on 16 ohms. It sounds good so I guess it is good Thanks for all the lessons. I just play the guitar, don't know squat about electrical stuff.
