Default Learning Guitar This Day and Age

I recently was searching for some tab on the "good ole" world wide web. It got me to thinking (scary, I know) Anyway, I recall how it was, learning to play guitar in the mid 1970"s. Back then (as most of you old schoolers know) it was very difficult finding anything to help you learn. One had to have a teacher or a friend who had a clue on how to start. We had only one over-priced music store in town. There was not a lot of sheet music available and there was no such a thing as "Instructional Video". Hell there wasn't even VCR. Little to nothing on TV except for Don Kirshners(sp?) Rock Concert. We relied on simple chord books and learning by ear on FM and vinyl. I remember the first time I took a lesson, I was so blown away by my Teacher. It was the first time I stood right in front of someone that nailed some of my favorite songs. Our world was much smaller then.

Now we can get free tab, lyrics and instructional video. We have live rock concerts on DVD. We have just about anything you need to know about playing guitar right here on the world wide web. Discount mail order sites like Musicians Friend...

OK I'll shut up now...I'm sounding like one of my Dad's "when I was young" stories.

As Archie Bunker would say..."those... were... the... days"

The thing I am so pissed about is that I have just bought a few bootleg DVD's of Randy and Eddie.

Its a shame that digitial technology did not evolve 20 years earlier. We would have a lot more information to share.

How come with all that information out there now, there aren't hardly any new hot guitar players?

Yep, thanks Blink 182 and Linkin Park.

Yeah, I wish we had some of the great stuff we have today 20 somewhat years ago when I actually had the time to sit around and practice all day, I'd be a guitar god by now..... With computer tab programs like Guitar Pro and sites that have 1000's of tabbed out songs, learning any song has become pretty easy, finding the time to play has become the hard part.....

in an interview with steve vai he was asked "what made you practice so hard when you were a kid?"...he said he really didn't have any distractions like kid's have today...cable/video games/dvds/etc...that explains to me why there's not that many hot shot guitar players these days...too many distractions...

all the killer guitar players when i was growing up were the nerds that stayed home and practiced constantly...
    let's be real...EVH was GOD
