    Default Did Alex take lessons?

Does anyone know if AVH had any drum teachers ever? Or what books he may have used to develop himself?

Actually Alex wanted to be a flamenco guitar player first..but Ed picked up alex's guitar and was better..I don't know if Alex took lessons for drums but I think Ed took guitar lessons in the very beginning.

Actually that was Alex who tried drums and turned out to be better than Ed, so they decided to switch places. In RHRN video Alex tells his father told him to play daily, no mention of any mentor. I think he's been just listening to records trying to learn from them, and I have a feeling both bros have been watching a lot of Led Zep videos.

    Thanks guys.

I did hear that story about Eddie and Alex switching instruments. I guess that's proof of one being more destined for an instrument, or having a calling.

Their father played in bands when they were young, as they got better they'd get to sit in with their dad.

My guess is that Alex started banging away at first, but he probably picked up pointers from the drummers that gigged with his dad. You know, "Sure kid, you can watch. Just stand back there, shut up and don't touch nothin'."

I wish I'd saved the Mordern Drummer interview. He may have had the same Mel Bay books I had, which are worthless for rock drumming but great for marching band. I think he just picked it up by ear.

Technically, Alex is the better, over-all musician of the family. He not only can read but can arrange complex musical parts for a large band. The last thing he did before the band took off was to arrange the music for 'West Side Story" at the Pasadena Junior College.

hmmm...kind of makes me wonder if Vai and Alex VH will ever hook up due to the West Side Story connection.
    Just go for it!

I never didn't get a clear answer of why he left college. Now I know. Thanks Brew Crew.

    Here's an article on Alex:

Doesn't sound like he was taking any drum lessons at all. Probably has just been messing up with a drummkit until it formed into his style.

Yeah, I think Alex studied music scoring or orchestration at Pasadena. He was on the cover of Modern Drummer I think a couple of times.

By the way, I think his hitting the cowbells on "Drop Dead Legs" and his fat groove on it are awesome - as is his "girl gone bad" beat.

Looks like there's more Hot for Teacha lessons:
