Oil - Is The Joyride Over?

Here's something I've been interested since my soph/jr. year of get high school: peak oil. Experts have said many times in the past 100 years that oil production was going to peak and we'd be in trouble. Lately, we're hearing a lot more of the same thing from many different sources.

There've been some good articles lately. This one from Yahoo! is the best one I've seen in the last several months. Some good books about this released in the last several years, too, like "The End of Oil and : On The Edge Of A Perilous New World" by Paul Roberts and "Powerdown: Options And Actions For A Post-Carbon World" by Richard Heinberg.

    What are your thoughts?

Bottom of page 6: "Oil has been so dominant for so long that to replace it, even partially, will take multiple sources of energy." Multiple sources.

Those crude oil fat cats sitting in their big white houses are in some serious denial.

    ??????????????????

there is something I always wondered.

if they can make synthetic oil, why can't they do the same with gas.

engine can run on many types of fuel with little or no modifications.

fuels which are cheaper to make and less of a pollution problem than regular gas and oil.
I think that big oil is holding on to this technology till it is needed bad , then they can continue to hit us in the pockets by saying that the cost will rise because of this new technology.

it was the same when they converted over to 13A in our air conditioning in the car.

when it first came out they were telling people that it will take thousands to convert your car to the new system.

now years later , for most model cars there is not cost to convert it.....

I think in the end, like usual we will be taken for a big JOYRIDE. big oil will again rape our pockets and make oil rich even richer....

    thanks alot Dick Cheney
    DAVE vs SAMMY

People need to let this go.....it is like comparing an ex wife to your current wife...you can say how things would have be different if she were still here but she left you, so you moved on with your life.....

Same with Van Halen...would they have liked to have Roth stay, yes...but he decided to leave so they moved on.......

and the rest is history….. well until 1996……..lol

Recently we had an Earth Day demonstration on campus, where a family who lives a couple blocks from me drove up in their Suburban SUV...powered by vegetable oil (biodiesel). They got a custom job done on their truck for around two grand and fuel up to the tune of less than $0.10 a gallon. That fucking RULES, and would be an indirect boon to the farming industry in this country, which is taking hit after hit after hit.

It's high time America got serious about a good energy plan and start moving away from oil and pouring actual research into alternative fuels rather than the lip service we've seen in the last four administrations, so other countries can't hold our economy hostage. What better way to secure the homeland than to get away from Mideast oil? It seems like the right plan to me.

Sadly they don't have a website. I'll check and see what kind of local press, if any, they've generated. It's a really cool mod.

In the meantime, this is something similar, a very informative article from Wired.

    Default Biodiesel

I've heard Willie Nelson owns a gas station/truck stop in Hillsboro TeXXas that sells the BioDiesel. Anyone know how they make the stuff?

I have previously read that the oil demand would peak sometime around 2020. From there it will slowly decline.

Stop bitching about the $$$ of gas.................go buy petro stocks and cash in.

That's another bad thing about Cleveland, The Plain Dealer. I always open the sunday paper and read the forum section for a few laughs. It's the worst paper next to the New York Times and LA Times.

I don't think oil has spiked already it's just that there aren't enough refineries to drill. The last refinery was built years ago but the US just keeps growing. I hope that Congress is able to set Bush's energy plan in motion and hopefully that will get us out of Middle East dependancy on oil. The big reason why it will take a long time for cars to switch over to alternate fuel is that on all of the boards of all of the major car companies, there is someone from a big oil company and vice-versa. Those two industries have become so intertwined that they wouldn't survive without the other.

Sadly, the typical american farmer will probably see little of the profits from something like that. If something like this were to take hold, the family farm will become something of the past (It has already begun) and corporations will be the farmers of the future.
