    Default Mikey's Playing -- Better/Worse?

Since Ed is the most visisble musical piece of VH -- and since every new song seems to diminish his role more and more, I was wondering . . .

How has Mikey's playing evolved over the years? When was his high point in terms of his chops? Is he getting better, has he peaked, or is he on the way down?

Since Ed is so visible, I have opinions about the questions as it related to him, but I wondered what you all think about Mikey.

By "his role", I meant Mikey's role. Sorry for the confusion.

I've always believed Mike is one of the most underrated bass players in the world. He's just FUCKIN' SOLID. I don't believe he's lost ANYTHING as a player (as evidenced by the tour last year) and probably improved more than we know. As far the high water mark(s) for him, in my book, it's gotta be Fair Warning and F.U.C.K. - NOBODY is SO SOLID on those sixteenth note grooves like he is...

I agree with all of that! His playing was stellar on the FW and FUCK tours, and after seeing him three weeks ago I can honestly say he hasn't lost a step.

    WHERE'S MIKEY???

Oh Mikey's definitely up there with the best of them, no doubt about that!!!!

His musical contribution on VHIII were sorely lacking. To me, he is the sound of VH, or at the very least, an important component of the overall VH sound we've all come to know and love (some to the point of worship).

For me, it would have to be VHII and Women and Children First with Fair Warning following veryclosebehind.

    Very underrated indeed.

I think Mike's bass playing shined for me on the Fair Wrning, F.U.C.K and Balance tour. Although I don't think there's ever been a time where his bass playing has been sub-par. Those are just the years that stick out in my head.

Hasn't it been discussed/beaten-to-death that Mike Anthony's bass skills are a moot issue? No? OK...I think Mike was better when Dave was in the band.

Then again. ALL was better then.

Just listen or watch Mike on IAT.....great playing. Sometimes, good bass playing goes unoticed.....and in a band like VH...that's a good thing.
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

I would say better. My favorite bass playing he did would be on For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, especially on Poundcake!

When I just saw Mike with Sammy in Chicago a few weeks ago, his playing was inspired. I'm not a musician, but I could hear Mike doing things I don't normally hear him do...mostly because it was just the three of them up there, but still...I think simply Mike as a Bass Player may not be the greatest in the world, but he is certainly in the team picture.

As far as a backup singer and personality...he's right up there.

If I put a hard rock band together I would want no other bass player than Michael Anthony for all the good reasons above.
