Default Would things have been different, IF

in 1998 VH introduced ONLY 3 new tracks with Cherone on vocals and then toured first before cutting a full new record?

This would have allowed the "fans" to see Gary's VH catalog range first and possibly have given them the time to gel as a group and then take that energy into the studio...

I wish it would have worked out regardless, but I don't think that would have made a difference.

I don't think so. I think it would have felt more like a cover band. Like it or not, at least Gary did do a studio album with the guys that they were promoting. Without a full album, it just would have felt even more like "the guy from Extreme is singing Panama and Dreams?"

haha...true...just on that..did they ever do any 'extreme' songs on the VH3 tour?? they obviously let sammy do some of his in 86.

I think also Gary came in at a time whan Rock was in a little rutt...grunge was still around and new school punk (offsping & greenday etc) were gettin the kiddies attention....dunno...just an observation.

I remember hearing that Ed offered to do some Extreme tunes on the tour but Gary declined and said he wanted it to be all VH. A good move on his part.

have you actually heard gary's singing on the record?

better yet, have you seen boots of his live performances?

i mean wtf? gary may be a smart and classy dude, but he has no sense of self or performance.

basically it's one of those situations where someone wanted badly to get into an industry/position for which they neither have no natural talent nor ability.

it's like edward van halens dad said (as per interview i have here in a mag), you either have it or you don't, and gary simply doesn't.

nice guy, but he needs to go into accounting or something else, performing is not his mojo, that much is clear on every level.

on a side note, i have always wondered what it would be like for vh to do a one off performance with the lead singer of the Atomic Punks. that dude has dlr down to a T and probably a lot easier to work with. certainly the audience would get a kick out of that!

I would (and I think MANY others) would dispute those statements as obsurd. Gary is a hell of a singer and performer--he just did not fit into VH. I think it's clear that you have formed an opinion on the guy without seeing his other performances and listening to his other songs. In fact, I'd go so far as to say you just don't like the guy for some reason. VH3 happens to be a pretty good cut, it just did not fit in with VH fans. Year to the Day is a phenomenal song. Talent is something you cannot deny and Gary has hit, there is no doubt about that.

Gary was the wrong choice. No fan was going to accept any 3rd singer. It had to be Dave at that time and it didn't work out. The only other option was Sam and we all know the story at that time.

Interesting question. If may have worked if the 3 songs were the best ones from that brief "era". It may have gotten the fans attention and may have wanted more.

Originally, I was ok with Gary coming into the band. I think if VH3 had a couple of hits and was recorded a little bit better, who knows.

The whole BOV1 saga with Dave severly damaged any chance of Gary doing well. Now, of course had VH3 been a kick ass CD it would have shut everybody up, but it just wasn't. Forget the reason why, bottom line is it just wasn't a good CD.

Perhaps a 2nd CD would have sent the message that Gary is here to stay and the live show would be cool since Gary was willing and able to sing any song from VH's back catalog.

I'm not saying that Gary meets your approval (understandable), but these words are just dumb. Check out Gary's fronting the Queen tunes at Wembley. He controlled the thing in front of 60,000 people.

Gary's stage abilities are a heck of a lot more well rounded than Sammy. I'm not saying he fit VH's audience, b/c it didn't work. But, let's not be silly.

Just listened to VHIII last night to try and figure things out with the VH sound and where things stand now. Other than blasting my ears out for an hour or two, I'm still left wondering.

The music was great tho on VHIII (note, music, not vocals).
