Default CMT: American Revolutions: Southern Rock

Airing June 4th, this looks like an interesting examination of this underrated, under appreciated, often dismissed genre:

    Agreed...this looks cool.

Does anyone else find it odd that CMT has become the new VH-1? The documentaries, features and specials (like Crossroads) are top notch, insightful and entertaining.

Looking forward to this program, thanks for the head's-up!

Wow, can't believe I am posting this on the VH pages...I have been very interested in the singer songwriter stuff for several years...I had to find something after VH well, basically ended as far as new tunes

Be sure to watch the clips on the Drive-by Truckers. This band has three gifted song writers, three lead guitars, a chick playing bass, and are about representing the South in a positive way...not as rebel flag waving rednecks. They even have a few tunes about how most Skynyrd fans missed the point about their favorite band...Skynyrd wasn't flag waving skinheads.

See you at the Rock Show...

Anyone catch this show? Vey well done. I agree w/Blout. The Southern rock genre', particuarly Lynyrd Skynyrd, was very misunderstood, due in large part to the record companies forging the redneck, outlaw image. Cases in point: Skynyrd's anti-gun stance: Saturday Night Special and even the fans misinterpreting the literal chart #s vs. ammunition in Gimme Back My Bullets. Regarding segregation, Ronnie wrote "now we all did what we could do" in Sweet Home Alabama.

The show renewed my enthusiasm for the Allmans and I had to bust out some old stuff. Even the younguns (my 7 and 10 year olds) were grooving to Midnight Rider!

I caught this one and it was a great show!!!

Agree these guys are overlooked by just about everyone (except those of us here and possibly a few others).

For Skynyrd to have lost so much and then come back with as much energy as they have, is a demonstration of their musical commitment. Also shows the commitment to the legacy of Skynyrd.

    Very cool.

I like Drive-By Truckers! A friend of mine from college, who now lives in Cali., introduced me to them a couple of months ago when he was staying with us for a week. Their website is www.drivebytruckers.com. There's another band that I like that would probably fit into the "southern rock" genre, although their website describes them as "high velocity honky-tonk". The name is Speedtrucker and one of the members of the band (speedtruckermf) is one of our very own Linkers. Their website is www.speedtrucker.com. Give 'em a listen...GREAT STUFF!!!

    Sounds like a VH reference;
didn't Dave describe VH as "high velocity folk music"?

Skynyrd rocks. I love the Sothern Rock genre. Even Kid Rock has a lot of southern influence in some of his stuff.

Not trying to start an argument, but you're all missing the forest for the trees.

You all want to go on and on about Skynyrd...but c'mon y'all...if it weren't for Duane Allman, the original long haired hippy outlaw...Wilson Pickett wouldn't have been nearly as popular as he became. Duanes's guitar was the driving force behind "Land of a Thousand Dances" and his killer cover of "Hey Jude."

"Layla", no matter how good Clapton is, wouldn't have been the cult classic and hit it is without that killer opening riff and slide sound had Duane not gon down to Florida and laid it out. That's what the show is about. It's about how they single handedly reinvented rock and roll. If it weren't for Wilson Pickett taking a chance on a hippy freak like Duane Allman, then Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels Band, etc....they'd been nothing more than bar bands and never become the bands that we jam out to.

No I'd never disagree with that. All of the "southern" bands definitely deserve some attention, as I wrote my last post, the Allman Brothers were definitely on my mind, as was Marshall Tucker. No, it's definitely all about Skynyrd, but they're up there too.

Equal opportunity and all that sorta thing. J/K

But no, I definitely agree with you on this one.

Yeah, Hughie left Skynyrd to reunion w/the Outlaws. It was indeed a great show.
