Daily Entertainment News for the Week of May 16th-20th

Sony Pictures Bites Into The Historian
    Source: ComingSoon!

Sony Pictures has picked up film rights to The Historian, Elizabeth Kostova's upcoming first novel, reports Variety. Red Wagon partners Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher will produce.

The novel, to be published on June 14, mixes history and mythology to re-create the world of Dracula and vampires.

The adventure tale centers around a young woman who searches Europe for her missing father, who took on the challenge of locating the grave of Vlad the Impaler (the bloodthirsty feudal lord who inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula). Along the way, she comes across a slew of bloodsuckers who try to stop her.

Cast Aboard Altman's Praire Home Companion
    Source: ComingSoon!

Meryl Streep, Lindsay Lohan, Woody Harrelson, John C. Reilly, Lily Tomlin and Maya Rudolph are set to star in Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion, a spin-off from Garrison Keillor's legendary U.S. radio variety show. Kevin Kline is also in talks to join the cast.

Keillor has written the script and will appear as himself in the movie, which will shoot this summer in Minneapolis, reports Variety.

In the film, as the ensemble of performers, musicians and back-stage crew prepare for the final live broadcast, long-simmering passions boil to the surface while an imperious stage manager struggles to hold everyone together.

Streep and Tomlin play sisters, while Lohan is a sexy ingenue. A menacing stranger, who might just be the angel of death, stalks in the wings, but the show must go on.

Brewster Goes to the Water's Edge
    Source: ComingSoon!
Jordana Brewster (The Fast and the Furious, Disney's upcoming Annapolis) will star in the horror-thriller Water's Edge, which Constantin Film ("Resident Evil" films) will finance and co-produce. Shooting will begin on location in Arizona and Los Angeles in September.

Variety says the film follows a local girl (Brewster) hired by a group of young vacationers as their designated houseboat driver on Arizona's Lake Powell. The floating party turns into a nightmare as a brutal murderer begins to kill the revelers one by one.

Water's Edge will mark the feature directorial debut of video and commercials helmer Chris Applebaum. Newcomer Jonathan Goldman wrote the script.

Henson Co. Planning Dark Crystal Sequel
    Source: ComingSoon!
The Jim Henson Company is planning to make a sequel to its 1982 fantasy classic The Dark Crystal, reports Variety.

Titled The Power of the Dark Crystal, the new movie is written by David Odell (The Dark Crystal, The Muppet Show) and Annette Duffy. No director is yet attached to the film which starts shooting this fall for a 2007 release. It will combine live-action animatronic characters with CG animation.

The story is set many years after the original, which was helmed by Frank Oz and Jim Henson. Original heroes Jen and Kira are now king and queen, and must fight to save their kingdom when the crystal is once again split.

The company is also developing an animated series, interactive games and other media as well.

Beatty Wants a Dick Tracy Sequel?
    Source: SuperheroHype!
Variety has an interesting article which says actor Warren Beatty is suing newspaper publisher Tribune Co. claiming he still has film rights to Dick Tracy and has plans for a second film in the works.

Beatty, who starred in and directed the 1990 film "Dick Tracy," based on the classic comicstrip, is seeking a ruling that he still owns film and other rights, plus $30 million in damages. The damage figure presumably is based on the profit Beatty expects to see from a sequel. Domestic box office for the film in 1990 was $100 million, making it the ninth highest-grossing film of that year.

According to the complaint, filed in L.A. Superior Court by Beatty's longtime attorney Bert Fields, Tribune assigned film, television and other rights in Dick Tracy to Beatty in a 1985 agreement. The assignment was subject to a complex, multistep reversion process, which Tribune would be required to follow for it to recapture the rights.

Raimi to Shoot Spidey 3 & 4 Together?
    Source: SuperheroHype!

    Ain't-It-Cool-News has received an interesting rumor about Spider-Man 3 and Spider-Man 4:

Someone like Griddlecake Troutwater, whom's eyes are all over Stage 20 on the Sony lot. According to him that Stage is finishing up construction on the areas to house Costume & Wardrobe Department... but not just for SPIDER-MAN 3... the current rumor on the lot is Raimi is going to be shooting 3 & 4 together. Now, amongst the tests Spidey crew have been shooting during the last few weeks, well they've used alot of SAND I hear. Sand being blown around.

    Jane & J.Lo's "Monster" Showing
    Source: E!Online

Monster-in-Law clawed its way to the top of the heap.

The love-hate comedy pitting screen divas Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda in a celluloid catfight debuted with $24 million over the weekend, according to preliminary tallies Sunday.

That was just enough to outscore Will Ferrell's soccer dad yukfest, Kicking & Screaming, which shot into second with an estimated $20.9 million.

A third new release, Unleashed, in which Jet Li's martial arts skills are tethered to the wicked ways of Bob Hoskins' Glasgow gangster, opened in third place with $10.5 million at considerably fewer sites than the top two newcomers.

The troika of newbies bounced last week's topper, Kingdom of Heaven, down to fourth place with just $9.6 million, a drop of 51 percent from its opening. The Crusades epic has grossed a relatively un-epic $35 million.

The final newcomer in wide release, Mindhunters, barely made the top 10. Not screened for critics, the crime drama starring Val Kilmer, Christian Slater, LL Cool Jay and Kathryn Morris earned a cut-rate $2 million in the 10 spot.

Exhibitors must be frantically counting down the days until Star Wars: Episode III--Revenge of the Sith opens (that would be four) to goose the box office--this week was the 12th week in a row that receipts were down from a year ago. The top 12 movies grossed $95.4 million, which although a gain of 22 percent over last weekend, was 7 percent lower than this time last year, when Troy opened and Van Helsing and Mean Girls were still pulling well.

In the race for the best per-site average, Monster-in-Law, the heavily hyped big-screen comeback of double Oscar winner Fonda (MIA since 1990's Stanley and Iris), opened at 3,424 locations where it averaged $7,017. Despite mostly lackluster review, women over 25 were reportedly eager to check out the New Line release--which gave Lopez her best debut, beating the $18.7 million for Maid in Manhattan in December 2002.

At a tad more sites--3,455--Ferrell's latest romp, in which he costars with Robert Duvall, Mike Ditka and a bunch of kids, averaged $6,049. The PG-rated Universal flicked performed at the top end of expectations, and considering the popularity of SNL alumnus, the studio hopes the film will have legs in the wake of Sith.

Unleashed, an R-rated Focus release, let loose at 1,955 sites, averaging $5,415. Mindhunters, an R-rated Dimension release, was dumped in 1,040 sites and averaged $1,926.

In limited release, the highest per-screen average belonged to the dance documentary Mad Hot Ballroom. The Paramount Classics PG release averaged $11,250 at two sites for $22,500. At 10 sites, Sony Pictures Classics' R-rated Layer Cake, a British crime drama starring rumored future 007 Daniel Craig, averaged a tasty $7,900 for $79,000.

Here's a rundown of the top 10 films from Friday to Sunday, based on estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations; final figures are due Monday afternoon:

    1. Monster-in-Law, $24 million
    2. Kicking & Screaming, $20.9 million
    3. Unleashed, $10.5 million
    4. Kingdom of Heaven, $9.6 million
    5. Crash, $7.2 million
    6. House of Wax, $6.2 million
    7. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, $4.7 million
    8. The Interpreter, $4.4 million
    9. XXX: State of Play, $2.2 million
    10. Mindhunters, $2 million
