Default The official "Advise from other Parents" thread

Since many of us were mere teenagers when VH 1 came out, many of us now have also become parents to the next generation VH fans. I for one am pretty new to this parenting thing and always have questions about things that come up.
I was thinking that many of us could benefit from the "parenting" veterans round here.
    My question is this.
Next Saturday we have what for us means the start of summer here in Seattle which is the U of W street fair. We are planning on taking mini me for a big day out, weather permitting.
I can't decide though if the Stroller is more appropriate or if I should go buy a backpack that my 1 year old can ride on my back in for wandering around. Anyone here use the backpack? If you were to do this what would you think best. She is really into seeing all the new things right now so we were worried she may not get the best visual stimuli riding in the Stroller. On the other hand if she get's tired, the Stroller is best. Taking the Stroller in and out of the funky shops in U district is a potential hassle though.
    What should Daddy do?

Ok the problem I have with backpacks is the fact that alot of people don't realize the heat these things create. The baby not only has their own body heat, but yours to deal with also. In some of my early childhood training we were taught that they were not good to use, unless it was a cool cloudy day.

Use a small "umbrella stroller" rather than the normal size one. Easier to manuever and can still hold a kid and some stuff. Carry the diapers, wipes, etc. in a normal backpack.

I second that 100%. Even then you can hang the backpack on the stroller handles but beware...when lifting the child out of the stroller the backpack might cause it to tip over backwards. Then ya' feel like a dumbass.
Umbrella strollers...soooo simple yet so handy!

Strollers rock. On the chicks board that my wife posts on everyone was talking up this Peg Perego stroller. Supposed to be some hip Italian job. Anyway, I thought it looked gay, but the women are supposed to know best right?
Well one test drive all day at the zoo, and we took it back.
Guess what we ended up with....the new Jeep Cherokee model. Two drink holders, Ipod hookup, lots of room underneath to put the diaper bag, etc...

I packed my kids at ages 2 and under all over places like Disney. My big thing is I hate having people walking around with cigarettes at eye level to my kid in the stroller. Plus, having to keep track of the stroller if you go into some place like a store. For instance, Disney... I front packed the baby (she was 1) and was able to get on and off rides as if it were just me. And I was certain she was secure and not gonna jump into the Small World water like she would have tried if she was just on my lap. I did take care to make sure they were never too hot when we packed. Lots of liquids and shade breaks. But the pack was always the way I preferred.

hmmm, when do they tend to get out of the crib and get into a bed...more importantly how do you keep them there once they migrate out of the crib.
    Thats my new question.

rf8, I am with you on the baby carriers! I did the same thing at Disney a couple years ago. Alex was about 8 months old, and I wore him a lot of the time. Going on a ride? Strap the kid on me. My husband wore it once, and refused to ever wear it again. Good thing I took a picture to prove it. He said, "How can you wear this thing all the time?" Women are the weaker sex? I think not.
