    Default Computer help!

    My computer took a shit!!! I was downloading a torrent when my son flicked the switch on the power strip. Now when I turn on the computer, it tells me it was improperly shut down and to either use a safe mode or regular start up to get it going again. Windows never loads up and it keeps going back to the same screen, over and over again. I've tried everything and nothing works, I'm on my old, slow ass computer with pop-ups galore.....any suggestions will be greatly appreceiated....the torrent file must have locked up my computer....this sucks!!! And the worst part is that all of our newborn 's baby pics are on that computer....I gotta get that computer back up and running just for those pics!!!

    Cool, once you have the CD you "might" need to use boot disks as well. Here's a link on how to use and obtain them.

    Good luck and let us know how it goes

    Another option you might have is a repair. Sounds like you don't have your own Windows XP CD (tsk tsk). If you get one, boot from it and go for the option to install Windows. Act as if you want to install Windows, but before you get too far in (before it asks you what partition you wish to install on), it might give you the option to Repair. Choose this option.
    If you do get the option to repair, and it's successful, when you get back into Windows you will need to redo and updates you'd done (provided you had done any of the Windows updates before). Sounds like you could also use Ad Aware and/or the Microsoft AntiSpyware program (obtainable from www.microsoft.com) to clean up some of the crapware on your computer that is plaguing you with popups.

    Usually I force Windows XP properly into Safe Mode by pressing F5 while the computer is booting up:

    1. Turn on your computer;
    2. Press F5 a couple of times until the safe mode screen comes up;
    3. Select the first option, "Safe Mode" - you don't need networking access to fix this problem;
    4. Once your desktop is up and running go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools and select the System Restore program;
    5. Restore to an earlier restore point; and
    6. Restart your comp and it should be fixed!

    If doesn't help, use the original XP O/S CD to "repair" it. You don't need to reinstall the entire O/S.

    System Restore can work. Alternatively, on the same menu Safe Mode is on, you can give the Last Known Good Configuration a shot. If that works out, you shouldn't need System Restore.

    There's 3 safe mode options, safe mode, safe mode command prompt and safe mode networking....none of which work.

    Open the window on the highest story of your home. Throw computer out said window.

    That will resolve all your issues!

    I wouldn't so as far as to get a Mac, but definitely get a new computer!

    'NOTHER LINKER W/PROBLEM

    My CD-ROM/CD Burner and my DVD player both stopped working suddenly. The lights come on, they cycle a disk, but don't show anything is loaded when you check them after clicking the "My Computer" icon.

    We run on Windows 98SE.

    When you double click on them, it has the little warning pop up with the "x" and says "drive not ready." I have a USB hook up and it shows my card reader and that a card is inserted, but when you double click on it, it does the same thing as the CD and DVD drives.

    My wife and I tried to update the drivers but it wouldn't allow it because it said no drives were found.

    The odd thing is that my "C" drive is still functional and my printer/scanner combo works and is hooked in via a USB cord.

    Any ideas or help would be exceptionally cool.
