    Default Last night in Detroit

I know i'm gonna get bashed for this but o well i have seen Hagar with Van Halen and without just about every tour they or he has had.
Last night was not good at all it seemed as though he was just there the music wasnt loud he did play some old stuff but it was not a very good show just never seemed to get in a groove to me.
the waitress thing was there as normal same lines it seemed to routine to me no spirt I guess.
And I was really looking forward to the show in my opinion it was dull and a very lackluster performance by him

I don't see why you should be bashed for this. If you didn't like the show and if it really was sloppy. I think everybody has his low moments, and Sam is not an exception. Plus he might have read something on this board before the show

    TOO BAD

Sounds like an "off" night for the show.
    Sorry bout that.
Maybe he's burning out and needs to get back into the studio, or take a break perhaps???
Sounds like the same show I saw when he made a stop here a few years back. Maybe things need freshening up a bit, or jet lag, or something.......

I was an Official Wabo Rat last night - Cantina ticket for me! I had a GREAT time! I got to hug Sammy when he walked thru the risers we were on. Later, while Mikey was at the bar next to us, I called him over and I got to hug him! I LOVE MIKEY!!! He is so cool! Dugie gave me a Mr. T pick! HA! I'll post my pictures, too. I did post one pic of Mike in the "May 12th in Detroit...who's in?" thread.

Brent, didja' see me? I was in the front row of the cantina! White t-shirt, on your left of the stage.

    Nice, Shari!

What was your take on the set? What'd he play?

I thought it was a good show too. the only bad part IMO was up for breakfast. But I gotta give credit where credit is due. Mikey TORE IT UP! He was SMOKIN! To bad he doesn't have the same freedom in VH. They were the best part of the show, it was like a big jam session. I'll post the pictures soon.

I've seen Sammy at least a dozen times (at least 6 times with VH and at least 6 times solo). And I'll agree with Dunn, it was an "off" night for Sammy. He's sounded better in the past. No slam intended. He just didn't sound as good as he normally does. Like on the Sam & Dave tour, he tore it up. He sounded great. This one, he just didn't sound quite as good.

I thought it was a little sloppy. A lot of technical issues. From the very first song, Sammy's guitar didn't work. So, his fat-ass (sorry, cheap shot, but the guy was HUGE) came out and gave Sammy a new guitar. Then, Sammy spent pretty much the entire second song fiddling with he guitar cord...and he had to call the guy out again who first swapped cords, and then had to mess with the guitar amps to get Sammy's guitar working. I mean, this is elementary stuff. It should have been fixed during sound check. It wasn't a big deal. It's not like Sammy pulled an Axel Rose and stormed off the set. He handled it like a champion, and didn't say anything about it, but it was very noticeable and set the tone for the entire night.

And at the start of the 2nd set, they had a similiar problem with Mike's microphone. It wouldn't work. So, once again, Sammy's tech had to run out and change mic's for Mikey and get it up and running during the middle of a song.

I do think the yelling of "WAITRESS!!!!!" in between songs is getting a little stale. But hey, it's Sammy's thing. So who really cares. The reason it seems stale to me, is because I've seen it a half dozen times. If I didn't go to every show when he comes to Detroit, then it would still look fresh and new. So hell, leave it in. The audience always seems to dig it. I just wish they sold Wabarita's at the concerts. Unfortunately, all they sold were shots of Cabo Wabo Tequila.

The stage was also kind of small. Much smaller than I'm normally used to seeing him play on. He had less area to move around in and the risers with the people on them were jammed pretty close. I think the cramped on-stage quarters might have been a little unsettling to the band as they seem to get crossed in each other's cords quite a lot.

He did pull out a few older songs I've never seen him play ("I've Done Everything For You", "Heavy Metal", "Baby's On Fire") and a newer one I really like that I've never seen him perform either ("Deeper Kind of Love"). Also, during "Things've Changed" he segued (sp?) into the Bob Segar song "Night Moves" briefly and then he finished "Things've Changed". It was kind of cool. Obviously he did this on two accounts: 1) The song's acoustic parts sound very similar to "Night Moves", and 2) because Bob Segar is a local boy and I'm sure he knew the homage would draw some big applause........and it did.

At any rate, it I'd say the show was just "ok".

If I had to grade it, I'd give the performance a "B-"

Just my opinion. I hope no one gets all huffy about it. Take care all.

It's ok to rip Sam folks. He's not perfect.

I thought he was good last week, but not great. I've seen him do much better, but last week he was just ok. They had mic issues at that show as well. I couldn't hear the backing vocals for shit. Sam just may be tired or somethin, but it was still good to see him do his thang.

I thought the reason Sam wanted to tour with the Wabo's is that he liked playing his stuff. Is he a VH cover band?

They only did 6 VH tunes in two sets. I wouldn't exactly call that a VH cover band.
