Default Dire Straits/ Mark Knopfler thread

I just got back from Mark Knopflers concert in Helsinki, Finland.. I've never really been a fan of DS or Knopflers solo stuff but the concert was great. Great songs and they played very good.. Only negative thing was that they didn't play my favourite song: "on every street"..

Dire straits are a great band, they wrote some truly amazing songs, Brothers in arms, sultans of swing, money for nothing. My old guitar teacher actually played with Mark Knopfler.

Man, for years I'd heard "Sultans of Swing" and never really paid attention to it. I liked it, but not enough to pay attention to it. One day it was on and all of a sudden the guitar solo hit me like a bus full of tourists. I couldn't believe it! From that point on, I had to listen to that song intently EVERYTIME that I heard it. It's turned out to be my favorite song from them and his guitar solo is amazing. I also like many other tunes, but "Money For Nothing" got played to death back in 1985 and I can't really stomach that one too much anymore. To me, radio killed that song.

If you can find it, I honestly think one of the best movie soundtracks of all time was for "Local Hero", by Mark Knopler.

    Two words: "Stunningly beautiful".

Also worth seeking out is the guitar duo record he made with Chet Atkins (sorry, I forget the title... ).

I always loved "Skate Away" and "Lady Writer".

And the "Love Over Gold" record rules.

World-class stuff. Money for Nothing was one of the first songs I ever learned to play all the way through on guitar...

Check some of the BT sites around and look for the San Antonio 1985 boot. I haven't seen a lot of their live stuff around. Here's the setlist:

    Disc 1
    Sultans Of Swing
    Why Worry
    Walk Of Life
    Two Young Lovers
    Brothers In Arms
    Solid Rock
Going Home (Theme From Local Hero)
    Disc 2
    Ride Across The River
    Expresso Love
    One World
    Romeo and Juliet
    Money For Nothing
    Tunnel Of Love

I hope these guys do a reunion tour some day. They were over before I ever attended my first concert...

I have Making Movies, but I'm particularly fond of The Princess Bride Soundtrack. Legend (a.k.a. liner notes) has it that movie producer Rob Reiner asked Mark Knopfler to produce and record the soundtrack. Knopfler's only demand was that the baseball cap worn by Marty DiBergi (played by Rob Reiner) in This Is Spinal Tap be placed in the film. Reiner said that baseball cap was long gone, but he had it reproduced and it hangs on the wall of the kid, played by Fred Savage.

The soundtrack is wonderfully crafted and is, for the most part, a relaxing journey to the realm of the middle ages.

Saw him live a few months ago.
    And he totally rocked!

The arena went out of control when he played Telegraph Road

Telegraph Road has to be one of my top five favorite DS songs.
