Default "Get Right With the Man"-the Van Zant Thread

Have you heard "Help Sombody", the new single from Van Zant? Johnny (Lynyrd Skynyrd) and Donnie (.38 Special) continue the tradition of southern rock's first family. New CD "Get Right With the Man" released today. A nice blend of Southern boogie and country. Good stuff!

I was hoping Johnny and Donnie would tour behind this release, but it looks like Skynyrd is touring throughout the summer.

Was there a big age discrepancy between Ronnie and his brothers? Seems like whenever you read about Donnie and Johnnie, it always mentions that Ronnie was there brother, but whenever you read about Ronnie, it never mentions them!

Ronnie was born in 1948, Donnie in 1952 and Johnny in 1960.

    I agree: Damn that airplane!

I was hoping Johnny and Donnie would tour behind Get Right With the Man. CMT has really embraced the two singles. But Johnny just had surgery on his vocal chords, and is going to be sidlined for awhile. Skynyrd cancelled several shows.

The 39th annual CMA Awards show takes place Nov. 15 at Madison Square Garden.

CMA Vocal Duo of the Year
    Big & Rich
    Brooks & Dunn
    Montgomery Gentry
    Van Zant
    The Warren Brothers

DAMN - It would be quite an amazing upset win for the boys...

Born and raised in Jacksonville, Fla., brothers Donnie and Johnny Van Zant were raised by a truck-driving father and a mother who worked at Dunkin' Donuts. At home, their parents listened to Merle Haggard, Hank Williams and Mel Tillis. However, their brother Ronnie took another musical direction, finding fame by fronting Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Although Ronnie died in the 1977 plane crash that killed three other people, the brothers have continued his musical legacy. Donnie founded .38 Special, one of the most popular Southern rock bands in the 1980s. Johnny headed an AOR-styled quintet on a 1985 album titled Van Zant (also the name of the group). They disbanded, however, when Johnny joined Lynyrd Skynyrd as lead vocalist when the band reunited in 1987.

The Van Zant group name was revived in 1998 when Johnny and Donnie joined forces on what was slated to be a one-off collaboration titled Brother to Brother. However, reaction to the record was positive enough to convince the duo to continue pursuing the project. A follow-up, Van Zant II, was issued in early 2001. They signed to Sony Nashville -- home to Gretchen Wilson and Montgomery Gentry -- in 2004. Get Right With the Man was released in 2005.
