Building a computer for the first time

    Hey all
My P2 266 finally gave up the gost on me so I'm putting together a computer myself with the help of a friend.

I would appreciate any comments on my hardware choices that any of you may have. The system will be used for school stuff, gaming and music recording.

    For the CPU
    Athlon 64 4000+

    Memory
    1 gig DDR or DDR2

    Motherboard
The AMD recomended PCI-E Asus board

    Harddrive
    1 10000 rpm 40 gig main
    1 10000 rpm 200 gig data drive

    Video card
BFG GeForce 6600 GT OC PCI-E

    DVD Ram Burner

    M Audio sound card

Does anybody know anything about higher end audio cards for recording music? I'm looking for something other than an Audigy...mabe something made specifically for recording music.

Also, will I need to get a CD burner, or with the DVD burner take care of that?

    Any input would be great!

The DVD burner will take care of CD burning, too. I noticed you typed DVD-RAM, but I am sure you meant DVD-ROM...as DVD-RAM isn't widely used and isn't the kind of disc for DVD video and such.

Your hardware choices sound nice. I would recommend M-Audio. I'm sure there are even better soundcards out there but they might double the price of your system..haha. I have an Audigy 2 and it isn't great for recording, so I have thought about getting an M-Audio external recording interface.

All I can say is that reading your specs, I became extremely jealous and now have a secret hope that when my power supply gave up last month it took the motherboard with it. I'm salivating over an AMD64 box.

Make sure the DVD writer you get can burn multiple formats, like DVD-RAM, DVD+RW, DVD-R, etc...they haven't picked a standard yet, so the best way to protect yourself is to get a drive that does it all, and hope they don't come out with a totally different standard in the end.

DVD RAM is a non-issue. and by the time thye decide on +R or -R as a standard, they'll be wondering whether to make DVD_HD or Blu-Ray standard.

    Thanks guys,

I'M wondering about the DVD burner. Does anyone have a specific model that they have had great results with?

Also I'm wondering about hard-drive speed. Is it worth springing for the 10,000 rpm guys or not? Like I said before, the system will be primarily be a music making and game playing unit. I don't mind spending the coin, but I want the best bang for my buck. I also do not mind upgrading later, so if it makes more sense to go for 7200 RPM disc's now and upgrade later I'm cool with that. It's all about cost benifit to me at this point.

Also, does anyone have any experience, (or thoughts) on the AMD FX series of CPU's? Isit worth going for it now, or should I wait and upgrade later?

On the topic of graghic cards, do you guys think it's a good idea to go for a SLI ready motherboard or is that something I should wait for?
