Daily Entertainment News for the Week of May 9th-13th

Hugo Weaving Takes Over Purefoy's Vendetta
    Source: ComingSoon!

Hugo Weaving has replaced James Purefoy in Warner Bros. Pictures' V For Vendetta, from the Wachowski brothers and Joel Silver. He will star opposite Natalie Portman as the the title vigilante character known as V.

Weaving replaces James Purefoy, who left the production for undisclosed reasons. The film, in production in Berlin with a November 4 release date, is based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Alan Moore and illustrator David Lloyd.

Set against the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, V For Vendetta tells the story of a mild-mannered young woman named Evey (Portman) who is rescued from a life-and-death situation by a masked vigilante (Weaving) known only as "V."

Incomparably charismatic and ferociously skilled in the art of combat and deception, V ignites a revolution when he detonates two London landmarks and takes over the government-controlled airwaves, urging his fellow citizens to rise up against tyranny and oppression. As Evey uncovers the truth about V's mysterious background, she also discovers the truth about herself -- and emerges as his unlikely ally in the culmination of his plot to bring freedom and justice back to a society fraught with cruelty and corruption.

Stephen Rea and Stephen Fry also star in the James McTeigue-directed film. The Watchowskis wrote the script.

Weaving is best known as Agent Smith in the Wachowskis' "The Matrix" trilogy and as Elrond in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Barker and Woo Team on Demonik
    Source: ComingSoon!

John Woo and Clive Barker will produce Demonik, says The Hollywood Reporter. Barker has the option to write, having begun a treatment that is being shopped to studios by Woo's Tiger Hill Entertainment.

The third-person action game already is under way from Tiger Hill, game developer Terminal Reality and game publisher Majesco, with the goal of shipping next year for next-generation consoles.

"In this game, you'll not only be witness to the genesis of a new villain, but you can play him," Barker told the trade. "I find that to be an extremely interesting way to create a new and compelling franchise."

In addition to the movie, there have been discussions about a graphic novel and limited-edition statue to coincide with the game launch, said Tiger Hill co-founder and producer Brad Foxhoven.

"Clive is known for creating great and horrific villains," Foxhoven said. "In the game, you get to play the villain, and in the movie, you will be terrified by him."

The plan is to bring in known actors to breathe life into the game's characters, Foxhoven added.

Elisha Cuthbert is Kept in Captivity
    Source: ComingSoon!
Elisha Cuthbert (House of Wax, 24) will star in Captivity, a Roland Joffe-directed thriller. Variety says the film is set in Manhattan but will be shot in Moscow in late May.

Cuthbert is set to play a fashion model who, along with a chauffeur, gets kidnapped and held in a small room by a serial killer. While the psycho methodically terrorizes them, the victims draw strength from each other and fall in love.

The script was written by Larry Cohen, who wrote the thrillers Phone Booth and Cellular.

John Carpenter on Masters of Horror
    Source: ComingSoon!

John Carpenter may not be directing the remake of his 1980 version of The Fog, but he will be helmer on the Masters of Horror, a TV series in which he will be one of many directing an episode. Carpenter who is sometimes referred to as "the master of horror" himself by fans, talked excitedly about his upcoming project and some of the challenges he'll endure.

"It's a little series we're doing for Showtime. We each have an hour. Each of us has an hour to shoot in ten days. And the first director they got was John Landis. He's now way over budget and way over schedule. So there may not be anymore 'Masters of Horror'. He may do them in", Carpenter said jokingly.

Carpenter's episode may not be out as soon as originally hoped. "Dario Argento starts next week. They pushed me later on the schedule because they're going to take all the money out of my show and put it in everybody else's".

Masters of Horror is not scheduled to be out until 2006 and Carpenter plans to begin shooting this summer.

"The story was written by Drew McWeeny and Scott Swan… It's called 'Cigarette Burns' and I've never seen anything else like it. It's real unique… I'll be shooting in July at some point. As I said, the first director up was John Landis. Last night I had dinner with Dario Argento. He's the second one up. They are going to kick the crew's *ss so by the time I get there you know. It'll be fun to do".

    Shrek 3 storyline spilt
    Source; Moviehole

The gang at Coming Soon rubbed shoulders with DreamWorks' co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg at a press conference for "Madagascar", and squeezed some "Shrek 3" details out of the bigwig.

Katzenberg unzipped the bag on the plot for the Mike Myers starring sequel, saying "When 'Shrek 3' opens, Shrek and Fiona are having to take on the duties of being the active king and queen of Far, Far Away. When we left him, the King was quite literally croaking. They're not very comfortable in these roles, so the King says to them, "If you can find the heir to the throne and bring him back, the Kingdom will be in good hands, then you can return to swamp and live your lives." Which is what they want to do. Shrek, Donkey and Puss go to the far side of the Kingdom of Far, Far Away where young "Artie", who is the nephew of Queen Lilian, is about to graduate school. Artie turns out to be young King Arthur and Shrek and Donkey and Puss have to convince this extremely rebellious young man, who's being voiced by Justin Timberlake, to come back and assume the throne. Along the way, Shrek invents the Round Table, chivalry. Donkey is the Lady in the Lake with the sword. You get it. Meanwhile, back at the Kingdom of Far, Far Away, Prince Charming decides that it's time for a coup d'etat. "The cat's away. He will play" So Fiona organizes all of the princesses into the underground Resistance movement, who are trying to hold things together until Shrek, Donkey, Puss and young King Arthur return. There you go."

    "Kingdom" Hardly Heavenly
    Source: E!Online
Kingdom of Heaven reigned supreme--but not supreme enough to turn around the long-running box-office slump.

Ridley Scott's Crusades epic debuted with a lower than expected $20 million, per preliminary studio figures Sunday, while the weekend's other major newcomer, House of Wax, debuted in a distant second with $12.2 million.

Their combined tallies were way below the $51.7 million sucked up this time last year by the vampire hunter saga Van Helsing. The top 12 movies this weekend grossed just $76.8 million, a drop of 24 percent from this time last year and off 5 percent from last weekend. That makes the 11th weekend in a row overall grosses were on the skids--the longest slump since July-October 2000.

Paul Dergarabedian, president of the receipt-tracking firm Exhibitor Relations, says the disappointing showing for Kingdom of Heaven, shouldn't be blamed on distributor Fox because "the studio did a beautiful marketing job and the movie got pretty good reviews." He reasons the weak opening for the big-budgeted sword-and-sandals saga has more to do with the marketplace being depressed. "It's just laying there," Dergarabedian says of the box office, crossing his fingers that when Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith finally opens May 19, there will be a much needed upturn in ticket sales.

Kingdom of Heaven, which reportedly cost $150 million to produce, is fronted by Orlando Bloom, Jeremy Irons and Liam Neeson. The R-rated spectacular swept into 3,216 sites, where it averaged just $6,219, a dismal kickoff to what is now officially summer movie season. (In contrast Universal's PG-13 Van Helsing, starring Hugh Jackman, averaged $14,475 at 3,575 sites.)

Trying to be upbeat, Bruce Snyder, Fox's domestic distribution chief, noted that the two-thirds of the audience for Kingdom of Heaven was over 25, which suggests the film was attracting a more sophisticated audience and hence might have legs. Snyder suggested to Reuters that the flick's drawing power might have been affected by its R rating and lengthy running time, which would have made for fewer showings and thus fewer ticket sales. Kingdom of Heaven did have a stronger opening overseas, Snyder said, where it grossed about $56 million.

Waxed by reviewers, House of Wax, Warner Bros.' R-rated slasher update of the camp '50s horror tale, this time starring imperiled young hotties Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murphy and the ubiquitous Paris Hilton, averaged $3,928 at 3,111 sites.

Doing better on average in more limited release was Crash. The we-clearly-can't-all-get-along drama about intersecting lives and simmering racial tension in Los Angeles opened in fourth place with $9.12 million. Directed by Paul Haggis and featuring an ensemble of Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Jennifer Esposito, Brendan Fraser, Thandie Newton and Ryan Phillippe, the R-rated Lions Gate release averaged $4,882 averaged at just 1,864 sites.

As for last week's top movie, the quirky space trip The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, it's almost time to panic. The film dropped 57 percent in its second weekend, earning $9.1 million in third place to bring its total to $35.1 million.

Here's a rundown of the top 10 films based on Sunday estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations; final figures are due Monday:

    1. Kingdom of Heaven, $20 million
    2. House of Wax, $12.2 million
    3. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, $9.12 million
    4. Crash, $9.1 million
    5. The Interpreter, $7.5 million
    6. XXX: State of the Union, $5.4 million
    7. The Amityville Horror, $3.15 million
    8. Sahara, $3.1 million
    9. A Lot Like Love, $3 million
    10. Fever Pitch, $2 million
