Blair Projected Winner in British Election

Blair Projected Winner in British Election

By ROBERT BARR, Associated Press Writer

Tony Blair's Labour Party won an unprecedented third term in office but with a sharply reduced majority in Parliament that could set the stage for Blair to be replaced by a party rival, according to exit poll projections broadcast as vote counting began in Britain's national election Thursday.

With a 66-seat majority Blair could face difficulties controlling a faction of his party deeply disillusioned with his leadership, especially over the war in Iraq, and ready for a new prime minister such as Treasury chief Gordon Brown.

The BBC projected that Labour would win with 37 percent of the popular vote, the lowest winning share ever. The Conservatives, showing their first signs of life since losing power eight years ago, were projected to take 33 percent.

The BBC and ITV projections, based on a survey of 13,000 or more voters in 115 closely contested districts, suggested Labour would win 356 seats, ahead of the Conservatives with 209. The Liberal Democrats, the only major party to oppose the Iraq war, were projected to win 53 seats — for them a disappointing gain of two seats.

The projected victory was a comedown for Blair following landslides in 1997 and 2001. In the previous House of Commons, Labour had 161 more seats than the combined opposition.

Such a result matched the "bloody nose" — a humiliation but not a defeat — that opponents had hoped to administer to the prime minister who took Britain into the divisive war in Iraq.

The government's strong economic record appears to have outweighed those resentments and help Labour secure a third term — a first for the party.

William Jones, a political analyst at Manchester University, said a 66-margin would make governing difficult for Blair.

"Anything under 100 he is in for a tough time," Jones said. "Under 50 he will be in terrible difficulties — I think we will see him disappear very quickly."

Geoff Andrews, a political analyst at the Open University, said a group of about 50 rebellious lawmakers within the Labour Party could exercise greater influence.

"If Blair's majority falls below 60 then you are in an area where an organized minority would have a strong bargaining power."

Counting in 645 Parliamentary districts was continuing through the night, and the winner would not be officially confirmed at least until Friday morning.

"There is going to be a Labour government, There is no doubt about that," Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott told the BBC. "I'm a little suspicious that it will be as low as you are suggesting."

We need some British guys to comment on this.

With G.W.Bush and Blair getting re-elected for the next terms, I really don't get why Bush senior was not

My theory is because "Clinton was hip" - he played sax and went on Arsenio and M-TV and all that crap and got a lot of dumbasses to vote for him (in addition to regular informed voters who felt, for whatever reasons, that he was the better choice). Probably way off base, but that's my theory. Doesn't explain how he got reelected of course. Sure didn't have any help from me...

    ....he didn't have Karl Rove.

Plus, I didn't feel that he actually wanted to win. POTUS is a hard job, I think that Bush wanted out but didn't want to let his party down.

Plus, 12 years of the Reagan Legacy was enough for many people, Americans get bored easily.

Good on Blair, he's still a good guy and Britan needs him, for now at least.

So Blair got re-elected and promissed to focus more on domestic issues. That's why I don't think they'll pull out forces from Iraq anytime soon, but I might be wrong.

And eh.. 12 years?? PMed you

Bush 1 was not that popular.
And I could argue that Bush 2 didn't really get reelected either, but that
would just be the wacky conspirator in me, wouldn't it?
I'll just say that axxman nailed wit the Karl Rove and leave it at that.
And in spite of Blair's complicity in the whole Iraq thingy, I like him anyway.

PS - how bout those British town hall meetings! Hooo weee...

It wasn't so much Blair that got elected, it was Labour. The legacy of Maggie and the Tory years is still in peoples minds and they pissed off the British people so bad with the home policies that there is a fear of letting them govern again. So Labour is still the better option. For Now!!! But Blair has been given a warning to shape up this time or it's a big bye bye. Also the Conservatives also ran a negative campaign. Pointing out faults and problems but not having real solutions is not the way to win over the British people.

Well they can always drop Blair for Brown, if it's really needed. But I don't think it would go that far.

BTW pointing out faults and mistakes didn't work for Kerry's campaign either

Ironic that someone from Eastern Europe who doesn't always have a firm grip on the English language can understand something our own politicians don't.

    Plain and simple reasons:

Majority of Americans thought he was a pussy.

Even though it wasn't entirely his fault, he failed to take down Saddam.

America was looking for a change, he was reached out to common folk and charmed many along the way.

    Monica needed her 15 minutes.

People were scared to death of the thought of Dan Quayle as president.
