    Default Moral Dilemma.....

I'm in a serious what to do...

    Here's the scoop.

I was just bragging about how great my car is the other day in the high mileage thread.....dumb.

Anyways, I sold my Volvo to this very cool Iraqi guy. He takes a 1500 dollar cash advance from his visa to pay for it. I give him every little detail that I know of that's wrong with the car and what I'd replace/repair etc if I were him. He's happy as a clam, signs the title, drives away.

He calls me about 5 minutes later asking me to pick him up down the street saying the car broke down.

I shit you not, less than one mile from my house, the timing belt snaps putting (I'm sure) the valves in to the top end. I'm thinking about 2k in damages.....this has got to be like the most unlucky thing I have ever witnessed in my life. This car has worked fine for me for 4 years or so with no major problems. This dude has it for 5 minutes in his name and it's completely fucked.

You see where I'm going I'm sure.

This dude is obviously strapped for cash. I'm no Rockefeller myself.

    Do I:

Say, sorry pally, that's some tough shit to deal with. Titles in your name. Later.

    Say, I'll split the repair.

Say I'll take the car back.

    What would you do?

I know what I'm going to do, but thought I'd throw this out there.

Have you looked under the hood to verify that the timing belt really did snap??? I'm just curious if he's trying to back out of the deal...

Those poor Iraqis just can't catch a break these days, can they.

Technically it's caveat emptor and you're off the hook. The bigger question is whether you want to screw him like that. Personally, I'd ask him what he wants and negotiate something with him. Maybe give him half of the purchase price back.

I don't want to sound harsh, Seen, but it is his car now. That's a tough break for him, but shit happens.

If for some reason he tried to sue your or something, he wouldn't get anything because it was an honest, but unfortunate event. It isn't like you sold it to him knowing that that was going to happen.

That's exactly why I'm often uncomfortable selling personal possessions and doing work on computers for family and friends. It's an easy way to end up in a spot where there's no clear answer.

I don't think there's any good solution to your situation. You're not his friend, and you have no real obligation to him. You do have an obligation to yourself, however. I would suggest that you do what you feel is right, considering your financial needs and whatever need you may have to feel contientious about the situation.

Did you at least give the guy $20 for a cab, or did you leave him there with his broken car?

That's a tough one. I'd feel really bad. I agree that meeting him halfway is a good idea.
    "Suck a fat one, faggot."
-MikeL, showing off that sharp wit of his.

"You may recognize some of these chemicals. Let's start with cyanide...The one the Aum Shinrikyo cult attempted to use to commit mass murder in a Tokyo subway in May 1995...The same cyanide produced routinely--1.4 million tons per year--for use in the production of plastics, adhesives, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and so on. It seems that those who put small amounts of cyanide in subways are terrorists. But those who produce it in mass quantities and contaminate broad reaches of soil, water, and air, killing countless living beings, are not terrorists, but rather capitalists, and are counted among the finest and most powerful people on the planet."

-Derrick Jensen, "What We Leave Behind"

"You know what's weird to me is Christians who are against the death penalty. After all, if it weren't for the death penalty, we wouldn't celebrate Easter!"

    -the late, great, Bill Hicks
