Gee - I thought I was at the DLR Army for a minute!

I haven't been 100% sold on Norton Anti-Virus lately, even though I renewed it for another year...

As far as the first line goes..As far as Anti-Virus, AVG Pro kills them both.

I get the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate version from school and it's performed very admirably. AVG is great, though, and I won't touch the home version of NAV with a ten foot pole, the invasive piece of crap it is.

Norton for the most part sucks. I've used a couple of different versions of Norton Internet Security (2002 and 2004), and have had major problems with a couple of their bug "fixes" and updates.

One update did this: Every 2-3 days, it wouldn't let me surf any web site that wasn't a secure site (as in https instead of http) until I rebooted my PC. Worked okay for another few daysand I had to reboot again. I went through that process over and over and over.... Eventually, it wouldn't let me view any http site at all. I had to search the net (on someone else's computer) and find someone's homemade patch to fix the problem since Norton wouldn't put out a patch themselves to fix this on some machines.

Another update completely knocked out my home network; my main PC wouldn't recognize any other computers or printers. I read all the online troubleshooters, tutorials, and support forums, and nothing would fix it. I just had to uninstall the damn program and be without any decent firewall or AV for about 3 weeks.

Right now I'm using McAfee's Security Center. I have mixed feelings about it; I had to disable the Privacy Service and the SpamKiller after many problems with IIS and Outlook Express (neither would work right), but the Personal Firewall and AntiVirus work perfectly fine for me.

I have AVG free version installed on another PC, and it works wonderfully. I've used the free Zone Alarm before and never had any problems with it. The big drawback with ZA is that it only works as a firewall on one computer; if you have a network or share an internet connection, you have to pay for the pro version.

Norton doesn't run well with Windows. It takes up entirely too much system resources. Don't believe me?

Install Norton's AV and run it for a week, then switch to AVG and tell me your system doesn't run faster.

My Norton keeps finding Trojan.Adwaheck everytime it scans my computer, but it fails everytime it tries to quarantine or delete it. I've gone to their website to see how to delete it from the registry, but when I get to where it says it's supposed to be nothing is there. It's driving me nuts! Does anybody know anything about this?

The Corporate version has treated me well the last few years. Minimal flash, annoyance, and no being pestered about subscriptions. The footprint isn't outlandish, either.

Unfortunately, we're switching to CA's eTrust at work. What a piece of pooh-pooh. Between that and CA's Altiris and spyware tools, I know our computers are secure. How do I know this? The programs are such pigs and introduce such instability that nobody is able to get anything done with their computers. I exaggerate a bit with that, but not by much.

On my Macs, I don't run any sort of anti-virus software. It's a welcome change from my PCs. No spyware, either. I spend plenty of man-hours per month dealing with security, virus, and spyware concerns on PCs.

I've done tech support work for the local schools the past five, almost six years now. It's an odd job, as I'm not part of the IT group but rather belong to a program that didn't feel they were being served well by the IT group. I do a little bit of everything. Your basic "I can't print" fix-it stuff, repairs, budgeting/planning (today's task is a five-year technology plan that I've been putting off for months...), staff training, special projects, working on grants, a very small amount of classroom teaching... it's pretty dependent upon what needs to be done on any given day. I'm one of the few men in our program, so I get to move heavy stuff as well.

It's fun for the most part, and I love my co-workers and administration. They give me an incredible amount of latitude in how I do my job. I'll be starting law school this summer, and they've all been very supportive of that goal. It's a good gig.

I run McAfee, and it does pretty good for me. I need to stop going to porn websites though. I have all kinds of crap on my hard drive that I am constantly having to get rid of.

I have the free ZoneAlarm on my home PC plus my wife has it on her laptop. We run out of the same router when she's home, and she is able to print to the printer (had to tell it in the settings somewhere to allow connections within the router).
