    Default Sign of the Apocolypse?

Rob Thomas debuts at No. 1

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Matchbox 20 front man Rob Thomas' first solo album became the first album available exclusively as a dual-sided disc to debut at No. 1, according to weekly sales data made available Wednesday.

Thomas' "Something to Be," which features the CD on one side and video footage on the other, sold 252,000 units in the week ended April 24, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Overall album sales year-to-date are down 8 percent in the year to date after the industry saw a 1.6 percent rise in 2004 over 2003, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

According to Thomas' label, Warner Music Group's Atlantic Records, it was also the first time a male artist from a pop or rock group has opened at No. 1 with a debut solo album.

Warner Music counted three acts among the week's top 10 selling albums just weeks ahead of the company's highly anticipated initial public offering, which is slated for the week of May 9, according to data provider Dealogic and other industry sources.

Another Warner act, Houston rapper Mike Jones, debuted at No. 3 as his "Who Is Mike Jones" sold about 181,000 units.

Grammy-winning punk rock trio Green Day, another Warner act, ranked at No. 8 with its "American Idiot," which sold about 60,000 units in the latest week, bringing the album's total sales tally to 3.3 million units, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Thomas' No. 1 debut pushed Mariah Carey's "Emancipation of Mimi" down to No. 2, in the latest week, with the diva's album selling about 226,000 units.

The European pop band Il Divo's self-titled album ranked No. 4, selling 147,000 units this week, followed by 50 Cent's "Massacre," which sold 127,000 units

Based on this post, all signs point to YES! I recently perused a rag called SPIN mag and it was pretty sad. They had a list of best/worst. Our guys ranked first for worst replacement lead singer! But judging from the other music they talked/wrote about and ranked, it's not surprising and I don't put much credence into anything from this rag.

But still and all, it's a pretty sad state of affairs as far as the "music industry" goes. Rap & Pop crap seems to be taking over, IMO and something needs to be done to put a stop to this nonsense!

No, not "seems" - more of a "has", and has for a long time... a long time...

Hey, don't knock that album too hard...it's pretty damn good, as long as you skip over the crappy single. It's really not too far removed from a Matchbox 20 record...

Hopefully the Matchbox 20 album you're referring to is Yourself or Someone Like You, because anything after that album deserves to be knocked hard.

Well, I'm not gonna argue with you guys about it - I guess either you dig them or you don't. Personally, I think they're one of the most talented bands out there today...

I'm really just joking. I actually really dig his voice. I don't know about one of the most talented band out there but...to each his own.

But like I was saying. He's got a great voice. Very distinctive with a whole lot of personality. I just don't think he's really explored it enough.

Why do a solo album if you're not going to try something different or try something risky? Just make another Matchbox album.

Well, a new Matchbox album is what I want but I read in Rolling Stone where Adam Gaynor quit the band. Hope they don't bust up alltogether...

If Rob Thomas' solo record keeps selling like it is. Matchbox is done.

Biggest sign of the Apocalypse? (After the success of Clay Aiken, that is.) Nobody knows how to SPELL apocalypse!

BTW, I like Matchbox 20. I've been told Matchbox 20 is 75% Rob Thomas anyway.
