    The worst of Sam

This isn't a Dave vs Sam thread cause I like them both. But the Dave albums were all about 30 mins long, all killer no filler. Whereas the Sam albums were longer mostly killer, some filler.

Here's a list of the songs that I think are filler on each Sam era album. Can you imagine how much better BALANCE would be without the filler mentioned below? Anyway, here's the list in chronological order.

    1) Get Up
    2) Inside
    3) AFU
    4) Source Of Infection
    5) Spanked
    6) In 'n' Out
    7) Man On A Mission
    8) The Seventh Seal
    9) Amsterdam
    10) Strung Out
    11) Doin' Time

    First of all, welcome newbie.

Second.....okay, I can see Spanked and MoaM on the list as they are mediocre songs. How, though, can you blame Sammy for Strung out and Doin' Time?

    Third......The Seventh Seal????? Filler????

Get Up, AFU, The Seventh Seal, and Amsterdam filler? I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. I think the Sammy albums are all great with the exception of a few songs.

I could agree with "Source of Infection" and "Inside", even "Man on a Mission". But "Get Up", "The Seventh Seal", "Amsterdam", and even "AFU" are pretty solid. I like "Spanked"; even though it has goofy lyrics, it has a good groove.

I respect your opinions on the songs, but I just don't really see how a few are "filler".

Anyone that would call Seventh Seal "filler" has problems.

I disagree with almost all this list with a few exceptions

    1) Get Up, AFU are kickass tunes with a fast pace...love em
    2) Source of Infection i actually enjoy very much....guitar work is amazing not to mention Sammy's pipes..unbelievable!!
    3)Seventh Seal....wow, enough said
    4) Man on a Mission is a great tune...not a fan of the beginning but the rest is really good..take another listen
    5) In 'n' Out and Amsterdam are fantastic tunes that are constantly goin on my iPod

Strung out, and doin' time are hardly Sam's fault at all, as said before.

Inside is goofy, but groovy from the 1 minute mark to the 3 minute mark(ish)

    Spanked....hmmmmmm were they drunk??? =P

1st post. 7th Seal as filler. 'Nuff said.

No filler on the Dave albums? Might I unnecessarily point out Dancing in the Streets?

While I do agree with some of those, I disagree with the majority. Get Up, AFU, Seventh Seal, Amsterdam, filler??? Now I do agree with you about Inside, In 'N Out, and Man On A Mission, but Spanked and Source of Infection are among my faves with Sammy. For Balance, fine, you can put down Doin' Time and Strung Out, but Seventh Seal and Amsterdam are great tunes. Amsterdams lyrics are tough to listen to, but its still a killer track. In terms of Balance, the only things I don't listen to on the album are Strung Out and Big Fat Money. Now that is a filler tune, it makes me shudder just to think about it.

I may not like some Sam or Dave songs as much as others but it certainly wasn't the singers' fault. Songs like "Inside" or "I'll Wait" certainly weren't Sam or Daves' fault.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

The first six albums always seem to get a free pass. They are damn good, but there's a few tunes on those that I don't think are great. Dancing in the Streets, Loss of Control, Your No Good (killer solo though!) to name a few.

I can agree with you on Strung Out, Doin Time, Man on a Mission, and Spanked. However, the rest of those songs I really like.

I like the lyrics to In N Out. It costs more to die than it does to be born. Clever lyrics to me anyway. Very nice wah-wah solo in that one, too.

Amsterdam rocks big time. One of the last heavy songs they ever did.

Source of Infection is kind of like I'm the One ten years later. Awesome.

I guess they can't all be great, but usually I can find a few cool things in every one of them.

What about the filler with DLR? Dancin In The Streets, Big Bad Bill has got to be the biggest filler of any VH album ever, even VHIII, along with Happy Trails, and that's just one album. And I think VHIII had better playing on it than a lot of Sam era songs. Is that Sam's fault though? No. Is it Gary's fault the songs on VHIII were botched by his singing? Yes. Something clicked with Ed on VHIII, and he needed someone to sing for them, he didn't want to put up with DLR, so he got Gary to kind of kick back and enjoy making music again. VH making music these days seems like a chore for them.
