    Default California Wildfires 2017

That time of the year again.

Smoke is literally covering most of NORCAL from the Pacific Ocean to Sacramento due to the Santa Rosa wildfires. 119,000 acres. high winds are not helping.

    Front page on cnn. http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/10/us/cal...ers/index.html

    Also on fox: http://www.foxnews.com/us/slideshow/...--oct--9--2017

Whole neighborhoods burned down. Schools, hospital, stores. Several big name wineries have also burned to nothing.

Also fires in Napa, Lake and Mendocino Counties.

    ++++

Looks like there are huge fires down in Orange County in SOCAL as well.

Watching coverage of this last night, these fires are terrible and devastating. "Diablo" winds fueling them. A perfect storm.
I have to admit I'm a little concerned about my trip to L.A. next week.
    Stay safe Cali linkers.

Unfortunately, between late August 'til the middle of November is the worst time for Santa Ana winds here in SoCal. I've been a lifelong coastal Orange County resident and it seems about every 3 years around this time we get a big enough fire that it just fucks up everything from the local mountains/hills right to the coast. I feel bad for people who lost their homes but many of us don't realize that the effects stretch far beyond the area that is burning.

I live about 20 miles Southwest of the Anaheim Hills fire and yesterday when it first flared up, the smoke plum was dumping a lot of ash directly in my area in Northern Huntington Beach near the 405 freeway. It was like light snow all day into the early evening and the sky was orange/gray dark enough that a lot of people were driving around with their headlights on mid-day. The air was virtually un-breathable and the ash gets on and in everything. Today, I spent the entire morning cleaning thick ash off my roof /solar panels and out of my pool.

Ugh. Yeah, I'm sorry for all the people being directly effected, evacuated, losing their homes and businesses, etc.
    Praying for everyone's safety there.
I'm also not looking forward to going there next week on business to breath that s#!t if these fires are still raging.

Yeah the wind was brutal yesterday but today it's not windy at all so that's good.

I remember those days when I lived there. Specifically the Laguna Beach and Ortega Highway fires in 1993 I think. Same scenario, I was driving to Saddleback College in the middle of the day with my headlights on with ash coming out of the sky like it was snowflakes.

Remembering my dad and I getting a little nervous about the Ortega Highway one as it was pretty close to our house in Coto De Caza and wondering if we were going to have to evacuate. Fortunately it never got close enough.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

My younger sister was minutes from having to evacuate her house last night and one of her daughter's friend's house burned to the ground yesterday. Horrible.

My friend up in Santa Rosa just lost everything.

I heard that Sammy was gonna do a moment of silence at his birthday bash for the people who died (IIRC the count was 15 the last time I looked.

Sorry to hear that. I've seen pics of that area. Seems like the winds driving the flames were so intense that they didn't have a chance to save most of those houses/structures. Just nothing they could do. Whole neighborhoods wiped out.

I have a good friend in the southeast part of Santa Rosa by Annadel State Park. They were ok on Sunday/Monday, but now have to evacuate. I let him know he and his wife and kid could stay at my place. http://www.pressdemocrat.com/news/75...g-from-annadel

Winds have also changed direction a few time. Now in Sacramento it is totally covered in smoke.

Couple good maps if you want to take a look at current conditions.

when I think of "wild fires" I think about fires out in the forest or in a rural area where there are homes spotted here and there.

When I see the pictures where suburban neighborhoods get completely wiped out, well, it's hard to wrap your brain around.

Just an update with how bad shit is near Santa Rosa/Sonoma/Napa....

    23 deaths
    3,500 structures destroyed
    8,000 firefighters battling 22 blazes

285 people reported missing in Sonoma County

    170,000 acres charred

Almost all Bay Area Schools (SF/Oak) are closed due to smoke in the air. In Sacramento and the surrounding areas all kids were kept indoors for lunch and PE.
