    Default Allan Holdsworth

I've heard alot about guitarist Allan Holdsworth, that he's amazing, and that he influenced Eddie. I've been wanting to buy some of his stuff, but whenever I go to Amazon or other online CD stores and listen to the short samples of the songs, there's never any impressive guitar to be heard. They nevery have any soloing or any techniques that sound difficult, just easy melodies, stuff that any Tom, Dick, or Harry could play, and then the samples are over. Anyway, I'm hoping those of you on here that know his work can point me in the right direction.

What album should I buy to hear his most impressive guitar playing?

    Thanks for the help

I'd get Metal Fatigue first ('85). Excellent production, and he kills the
gtr, esp on "Devil Take the Hindmost".

Also worth checking out is Road Games. This is the one EVH was sposta
produce, but it didn't happen. Both of these are excellent fusion trio
outings. If you'd like a jazzier Eric Johnson with mucho legato, this stuff's
    for you.

After this he started getting into the Synthe Axe, and that's where Allan
    and I parted ways. He's done a lot of stuff with other people, though;
check out UK's self titled and even older Gong and Soft Machine
recordings. I think ALL of this stuff is likely out of print, so you'll have to
    do some digging.

It's gtr synth. He was as good as anybody on those things but, you know
it's like, "hey, your gtr sounds great. let's have some more of that."
His music -imo - just became too self indulgent and gtr synth never
really cracked the code or did it for me like i thought it might.
it's like when i hear it on vai's new record, it's like "aaarrrggghhh!".
Nothing screams nerd cheese like gtr synth.

Don't let the mid/late 80's synthaxe stuff scare you. In the 1990s-Today he got harcore into the "guitar" again. It started with "Secrets" and continues today. His album "The 16 Men of Tain" from a few years ago is one of the greatest guitar records EVER. He also did a jaw dropping album of Jazz standards (played with his distorted, smooth solo style) called "None TOo Soon", among others in the last 15 years.

My current favorites are the two live CDs he just released. "Then" was recorded in 1989 and just smokes with the guitar parts (no synth) he also had "All Night Wrong" from 2002 which is a killer live trio set.

To to www.Audiophileimports.com and check out his CDs....they have good samples.

Now...try this one out for size, and this is official, not rumor. Allan Holdsworth just replaced Tony McAlpine in Planet X (with Derek Sherinian and Virgil Donati). "The Sickest Instrumental Band in the Universe"

For some reason I always thought he was about the same age as Ed, the way Ed talked about him I thought of them as contemporaries.

Progressive rock and jazz fusion guitar pioneer Allan Holdsworth, who Eddie Van Halen called “the best, in my book,” has died of unknown causes at the age of 70.

Holdsworth’s daughter Louise confirmed the news on Facebook, saying “it is with heavy hearts that we notify everyone of the passing of our beloved father. We would appreciate privacy and time while we grieve the loss of our dad, grandad, friend and musical genius. We will update close friends and family when service arrangements have been made and will notify the public of an open memorial service, which all would be welcome. We are undeniably still in shock with his unexpected death and cannot begin to put into words the overwhelming sadness we are experiencing. He is missed tremendously.”

Holdsworth first appeared on a record in 1969 with the group ‘Igginbottom. After ’70s stints in groundbreaking progressive rock and jazz fusion acts such as Soft Machine, the New Tony Williams Lifetime, Pierre Moerlen’s Gong, Bruford and U.K., he released his first official solo album, I.O.U., in 1982. Later in the decade he became an early proponent of a synthesized guitar known as the SynthAxe, and his experimentation with the instrument would define much of his work over the next decade and a half.

“Holdsworth is so damned good that I can’t cop anything. I can’t understand what he’s doing,” Van Halen raved in 2008. “I’ve got to do this [does two-hand tapping], whereas he’ll do it with one hand.”

Holdsworth’s 11th and most recent studio album was 2001’s Flat Tire: Music for a Non-Existent Movie. In 2009 he released the live album Blues for Tony – a tribute to drummer and former bandmate Tony Williams – alongside Alan Pasqua, Chad Wackerman and Jimmy Haslip.

Upon hearing of his death, Holdsworth’s guitar playing peers were quick to sing his praises on social media, with Toto‘s Steve Lukather saying he “changed the game” and Peter Frampton describing him as “brilliant, unique.”

If this doesn't bring home to Ed the need to make amends with Michael Anthony before it's too late then nothing will.
