    Default Epiphone???

I was supposed to be buying a Gibson LP, and getting a good deal on it, but those plans have fell through. Any thoughts on Epiphones?

i have a friend who has an epiphone lp. i swear, that thing played awsome! its basically all gibson in all except the headstock, which i don't like personally...

however, its your call. its got everything you basically want in a lp.

I personally feel that alot of Gibsons are WAY overpriced.
If I were going to spend that kinda scratch, I'd buy a PRS.

Epiphones, in my opinion, are decent guitars for the money but I would consider "cherry picking" to find one that you really like as opposed to mail order or eBay.

When you find one that feels good, the only other thing you may want to consider would be to change out the pickups.

i found a near mint 1991 epi lp custom at a pawn shop for 280 bucks with out case. i switched out the pick ups. it feels solid has good weight and the actions good.

possibly they might not match up to gibson in terms of binding and tuners and bridge material but again those are easily fixed for 35 bucks each.

Dude, if you want a Gibson get a Gibson! if you have to save up then do it! I sold Epiphones and I didnt like them at all. I found the pickups to be cheap and they squeal like crazy because they are not waxed or potted right. I have also found that they dont stay in tune very well because the tuners are cheap. This is just my opinion but im being honest. You can always get a used Les Paul for a decent price if you look hard enough. Good luck though!!

That's what I mean when I say "Cherry Pick".
I still say there are some really nice ones out there. I've owned a few myself over the years.
I think you'll get alot of mixed feedback because the quality of the Epiphones aren't very consistant from guitar to guitar IMO. But it sounds as though we're all in agreement about the pickups.

Dude, I play an Epiphone LP custom that I bought because I couldn't afford the real thing. My band went to record it's first CD a few years ago and the producer had the exact same guitar except it was a Gibson. So I thought "hey I'll use that 'cause it'll sound even better!" Half way through tracking the album, the producer made me switch back to the Epi cause it sounded better.

-Who knows, it's all in your ears. If the Epi sounds better to you, then go for it. I personally dont think a gibson is worth the money if you find the right epi.

I bought myself an Epiphone a while ago and just didn't like it. If you are looking for a LP look and sound, try a Tokai - Love Rock! I have one and I SWEAR it is just as good, sounding and looking as an actual LP. If you want I can link some pics if you want to see it....

What is a Tokai - Love Rock? If you get a chance, I would love to see your pics of that one. I agree that Gibsons are way overpriced. Why is that? A friend of mine has some business dealings with most of the major guitar companies. He says that Gibson is by far the most difficult to deal with. I also noticed that Sam Ash does not have any Gibsons in their catalog any more. Maybe I will go buy Sammy's new Yamaha.

    No problem.
Basically Gibsons are very nice guitars, but are overpriced because they've been around long, have made a solid name for themselves...but mostly because people will pay that much. I don't like to rush into a $2300 purchase because of a name. This Tokai sounds like a Gibon for $600.

Basically, here are the specs for it.
And it honestly sounds like a Les Paul...

SOLID MAHOGANY BODY WITH FLAME MAPLE TOP

HARD MAPLE SET NECK, ROSEWOOD FINGERBOARD AND REAL BONE NUT

    VINTAGE PAF STYLE HUMBUCKERS

KLUSEN STYLE SEALED MACHINE HEADS AND VINTAGE STYLE ELECTRONICS

    PEARLOID BLOCK INLAYS

    1.68" NUT WIDTH

2 VOLUME, 2 TONE, 3 WAY PICKUP SELECTOR

    Thanks!

It actually says Love Rock, not Les Paul. But looks's like LP at a distance.

I second the Tokai comment. They are extrememly nice guitars regardless of the price. There are some selling on ebay right now, if you go that route and get a used one you will not lose anything on resale if that comes up for some reason. They make more then a few Gibson copies, and there all good.
