    Default Why not?

I'm wondering (out loud), why is it that the band doesn't release more music?

I'm trying to reconcile the fact that Eddie continually says he a "musician" and that "it's all about the music" and "if it touches one person, it's worth it", etc. Couple that with the fact he has his own studio, can pretty much produce his own stuff, plays lead, acousitc, bass, etc., and has a pretty decent drummer he can get cheap.

Then, add to that that he has a ton of time (no current tour plans, is pretty much a hermit when it comes to public appearances) and perpetually claims all he does is work on new stuff.

With that being said, why doesn't he release new stuff on his own? Why not just create, create, create? That's where the fun is. Not for the glory. Not for the record sales, but for the music and the people it touches?

Is it ego? Is it fear? Is it that he's so locked up by the record label? Is it the alcoholism?

What do the experts around here think?

You know. I don't really think anyone knows. I'll say the longer we wait. The higher our expectations are going to be. We could speculater day and night why he hasn't, or rather doesn't ,release more music. But that's still not gonna get us the music any faster.

I WANT to say they are going to hit us with lots of material soon....

But Im conditioned over the last 6 years to get used to expecting nothing from van halen.

And when they throw us 3 songs we eat it up like we're starved, because we are.

I want to believe those days are OVER.

That they will release stuff soon and in rapid succession.

    But we'll see...

If we don't AT LEAST get the 2004 Tour cd/dvd...by Septemeber...then I dunno...

    Good question.

I honestly think that Ed suffers a bit from a form of paranoia. He says he doesn't mind critics getting down on him, but We've all heard the stories...he's afraid to release the stuff that never saw the light of day, because he's afraid it will not reach critical expecations. I'm not judging Ed, some of this is just who he is. In many ways, it is why most of what he releases is of high quality.

I think the general reception of VH3 really hurt Ed. How would it feel to be on top for twenty years and suddenly plummet? We'll never know. But the fan reception made him second-guess and since then, he's had trouble making decisions. I honestly think he should have said "fuck what you all think" and followed up with another Gary album. What makes VH3 better to me than the new songs is that it was Eddie playing with feeling. These new songs are too "safe" for me. It's like he just said "they only like this kind of stuff from me." That's not the way to think. The best thing for Eddie to do is to make a solo album. That way he can develop a true fanbase and not be expected to write hard rock songs. We all know he is more capable than that.

I'm sure Ed has been creating tons of music. He's just not RELEASING the music. I'm hoping that they release something soon.

I kind of agree. I wonder if the "failure" (commercially speaking) of III kills any chance we had of him trying new stuff. Since his ego got burnt and his marriage fell apart, I just wonder if he has the confidence to do much any more (w/o someone leading him by the hand . . . but no one can seem to put up with him).

Just so people don't think I am too crazy, I was being sarcastic when I said "decent".

The fact that VH has no label makes me think it would be EASIER to release anything you want, if it's really true that it's NOT about the money. I frnakly don't buy it, though. I think Ed's fragile ego has to have affirmationi from the market. Heck, I know plemty of indie's (as I'm sure you all do) that release quality stuff on their own. With the Van Halen name, he coule release whatever he wanted through the WWW, fill up theaters, and make more money than he does with the labels.

Why don't they release more music? It's simple. Eddie doesn't want to.

I know it'll never happen, but he could release his own cd that he has less than $100,000 in the production, do a theater tour of the west coast, and make a killing.

I say despite what he'll tell you, the fire is gone from the VH bros. They've had a nice run, though. Heck, who could blame them. They've "been there, done that" for 30 years.

Either that or the fire is down there, but can overcome the alcoholism.

Ed likes MAKING music, not RELEASING music. I'm sure he's been recording stuff for the past years. The reasons he doesn't want to release it are known to him only. He could very easily do lots of movie scores or TV music if he wanted to. He records all the time and had hours of hours of music we'll probably never get to hear. Hell, the song 1984 comes from about a 45 minute piece of keyboard track that Ed recorded. Can you imagine how much of stuff like that is in 5150?

I also think that VH3 is partly to blame.

The guy lives and breathes music. He probably has decided that why go through the BS of putting all your heart into something and then have it get ripped to shreds.

Who knows maybe he sees us fans very similar to him and that is why he does not like us as much.

Val put everything she had into their marriage and he screwed it up for her.

He put everything into VH3 and the fans screwed it up for him.

    Psycho babble but who knows.
