Default Has VH ever done this?

You can hear the main riff from "Top of the World" in the fade to "Jump." So I'm wondering why I've never heard VH take Jump right into TOTW when playing live. I've not seen this in any of the shows I've attended or concerts I've listened to.

Of course, there's the problem of Jump being in the key of C and TOTW being in E. However, I've heard plenty of live recordings with Sammy at the helm where VH has done Jump in D. So why not detune from E and play both songs back to back in D?

Then again, maybe they've done this and I just haven't heard it. Anyone? Bueller?

Sorry. I should have been clearer. I mean play both songs in the same key, running right from Jump to TOTW without a break.

Great question, we'll throw it in the Song forum and see if we can get an answer.
Actually I think most of us are Dave, Sam, and Mike fans. There's just a small group of people who have strange allegiances and like to get into petty pissing contests that I can't believe everyone on this site isn't bored of. - Brett

If they were to play "TOTW" a step lower to match live "Jump", then Ed would have to either change the way he plays the song, or have a guitar tuned a step down and switch guitars really quick. Or, if he had the tuned-down guitar, I suppose he could use it for both songs and play "Jump" two more frets higher. It's probably all just too much of a hassle to do.

Or maybe Eddie just doesn't want it make too obvious to Joe Average that he's rehashing his own licks? Personally, I don't really care that much, cos TOW stands on it's own as a good song, but it's certainly the easy way out to recycle the riff from one of your biggest hits as the framework for another radio friendly tune.

I'm not surprised that it happens, but I am a little surprised that some musicians are so obvious about it. Joe Perry once said he wrote the song "Don't Get Mad, Get Even" on Pump by playing the riff for "Rag Doll" backwards. Whatever works I guess. Maybe I just miss the days when Ed had some much original riffage in him, he could barely contain himself. Fair Warning springs to mind.

I was going to prospose this theory as well.

I dunno. I've always thought of Ed as belonging to the "If it sounds good, it is good" camp, and I doubt he'd care much if people thought he was rehashing old licks. After For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge came out, I remember a few articles discussed the lick from TOTW and Eddie had talked about it being an incomplete song idea that he tacked onto the fade in Jump back in the day and then came back to later. If he wanted to hide the whole "rehashed lick" thing, he went about it in a very strange way.

As far as changing the way he plays the two songs in order to string them together, I don't think it would be too much of an adjustment. He could play TOTW much the way he already does, just downtuned to D. As far as Jump goes, the rhythm parts of that song are very simple and he would probably have to make significant adjustments only to the guitar solo leading into the keyboard solo.
