"We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat...." The Shark Tale Thread

    New Garden-Statuary Gift Idea

Let's change this around to a shark-tale thread. I've always been highly interested in reading about sharks and their behavior. I saw on the news recently where in some part of Florida, thousands of sharks were seen swimming off the coast nearby Spring Breakers. Anybody else have any actual close encounters with a shark?

Yup, the spring break/snow-birds have been having a great time with the beach closings these past few weeks here, and with good reason (if you'd seen the local tv footage...simply mind blowing to see that many sharks in the water ).

Now, if you are serious...here's a couple of true shark's tales.

Throughout Florida, there is an inland "canal" paralleling the Atlantic ocean, called the Intracoastal Waterway. During WWII, it was feared that German Submarines might enter it, so the war department had these 12-20 foot concrete "jacks" made, to block any possible entry. (Think "jacks" like the child's game ball and jacks, or huge multidimensional "x"s).

After the war, they were dumped in the ocean, just off the Yankee Clipper Hotel in Fort Lauderdale. It quickly became a neat place to scuba dive, and you can reach them by simply holding your breath, too.

Around 1988, a bunch of us Hobie Cat sailors decided to head over there and free dive. This went well, until I looked up, and within 9 feet of me was a 16 foot tiger shark, lurking in the shadows.

I lept out of the water like a polaris missile, yet non of my friends would respond, thinking I was pulling their collective leg by yelling "Shark!!!" at the top of my lungs.

About 3 minutes later, 16 people were climbing all over my boat, having all just done the Polaris launch themselves.

Yet later, in 1991, is my alltime tale, and this post is about to time out, so...

    To be continued...

Sorry for the delay...ok, we are back in 1991.

As I said, at the time, I sailed Hobie Cats with my friend D. We had a club, called Cat 44 that held regattas and parties, yet at the time it was starting to fall apart.

There were about 4 boats, and this included this nutcase called Wild Bill, who had rigged up a Sunfish (or lake sailer) for use in the Atlantic. It was always falling apart, and this day was no exeption, as he lost his keel about a mile and a half out.

We were watching from shore with binoculars, when he went kerplunk.
Quickly, we set off with 3 boats to attempt a rescue.

Now the problem with lake sailers is the fact that they are as heavy as a Toyota. Pulling it with only wind power simply would not work, as the wind was weak anyway (probably why we were on shore in the first place).

Since I was nearest, I dove in and Bill and I were to basically push this turd inland.

Got news for you: swimming and pushing a dead weight in the water is tedious work, and after an hour and a half, we were both spent. At this time, we were about 70 yards offshore, and had started to drift away from the Hobie beach over towards the dayswimmer's area.

I knew this because the fucking lifeguard started blowing his whistle and waving frantically at us. We ignored the little twit, thinking him to be annoyed at our drift, until we realised there were several lifeguards now blowing whistles and waving at us.

When we got to about 50 feet, they all ran to us and started grabbing Bill and I, pulling us away from the boat. We were too damned tired to argue, and they dragged us ashore.

Upon the beach, I finally realised what all the yelling was about: a dorsal fin was some 25 feet behind us.
Soon after, a large shark actually swam up into the beach break, then turned and headed north along the shore, with a dozen lifeguards clearing a path for it.

Now a shark only comes that close to the beach when it is starving or sick. It must have thought the crippled boat was a large, slow moving dinner.

A dinner my friend Bill and I would have been a part of, had the shark not been spotted from the lifeguard tower by an astute lifeguard.

I stopped making fun of those guys that day.

    Those are my shark tales.

Actually, those are clips from the local newscast...the sighting was about 24 miles south, in DelRay Beach.

It was estimated to be between several hundreds/close to a thousand sharks...

That's just insane. I've never seen anything like that, although we have had a whale in the Delaware River for about a week or so.
