Daily Entertainment News for the Week of April 18-22nd

    More Jump Over the Hedge
    Source: ComingSoon!

Over the Hedge co-director tells BlackFilm that Nick Nolte, Catherine O'Hara, William Shatner, Steve Carell, Eugene Levy, Wanda Sykes and Avril Lavigne have joined the voice cast of the DreamWorks animated comedy.

In the May 19, 2006 feature, Bruce Willis will voice the mischievous con-artist raccoon R.J., and Garry Shandling will be the voice of the sensitive turtle named Verne. When R.J., Verne and their woodland friends find a suburban housing development encroaching on their forest home, Verne's first instinct is to retreat into his shell and leave, but the ever-opportunistic R.J. sees a treasure trove to be had from his unsuspecting new neighbors. Together, Verne and R.J. form an unlikely friendship as they learn to co-exist with -- and even exploit -- this strange new world called suburbia.

Avril Lavigne is making her big screen debut playing William Shatner's daughter.

    McKenzie Takes Pacific Air 121
    Source: ComingSoon!

The OC star Benjamin McKenzie has joined Samuel L. Jackson in the New Line Cinema Pacific Air 121 (aka "Snakes on a Plane"), reports Production Weekly.

Directed by David Ellis (Cellular, Final Destination 2), the horror-thriller stars Jackson as an FBI agent on a long quest to bring a ruthless mob boss to justice. He finds a witness and takes him on a commercial flight from Hawaii to Los Angeles. Trouble is, the mob boss has loaded the cargo with all kinds of venomous snakes. The rookie pilot (McKenzie) and frightened passengers must band together to survive.

Filming will take place in Vancouver from June 13th through August 24th.

Will Toad return in X3? Well, Ray Park thinks so...
    Source: Ain't It Cool News

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some interesting talk from Darth Maul himself, Mr. Ray Park, who appeared in beautiful, windy Wellington, New Zealand this last weekend at Armageddon Con. Here's the tip I got about his words on a possible return to the X-MEN franchise:
    Hello there Harry.

I'm living in New Zealand at the moment, and yesterday went to the Armageddon convention in Wellington. One of the panel was Maul himself, Ray Park. Top fella, he got all the geeks onstage doing lightsabre and kung fu thwacking and answered questions. Someone asked if he was up for X3 with Matthew Vaughan, and he said he was in negotiations with the producers to reprise the role of Toad, as you never really saw him die in the first movie, (although Halle Berry's excerable "Do you know what happens to a toad when it gets hit by lightning?" quip would kill most peole with auditory functions instantly).

Don't know if this is any use to you, it might be a particularly slow news day or something. If you use it call me Applenose.

    Cheers mate.

So, how seriously can we take that... I'd just say to keep in mind that most actors are the last to know about what's really going on with big projects like these. If they are talking about bringing back Toad, then I just hope that Matthew Vaughn takes more advantage of Park's physical skills than Singer did in the original X-MEN film. Toad felt bulky and way too wire-fu-y in the first film and I know Park could do some great work if freed from wardrobe and wires... Well, by freed from wardrobe, I mean the layers he was wearing in X1, not that he'd be jumping around with his Toad dork flapping about. You know what I mean.
Anyway, just the fact that they're talking about bringing in all these minor villains... from Juggernaut to Toad... I wonder what Vaughn has up his sleeve. I can't wait to find out!

    Hitcher washes up on Bay
    Source: Moviehole

The previously rumoured remake of 80's chiller "The Hitcher" is a lock, says Variety.

"Someone mentioned the title and I said, 'That's the one we should do," Producer Michael Bay said. "I loved it as a kid, and we can add some cool twists and turn it into a rocking film." One possibility, he suggested, is to make the protagonist female.

It's believed Bay could be looking at Jessica Biel - who played the lead in Bay's retool of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" - to play the aforesaid heroine.

No word - or hints - yet on who might play the film's villain. Rutger Hauer played the rogue in the original.

Bay - who also informed the site that he's close to picking a director for the "Texas Chainsaw" prequel- said they will quickly ink a writer for the Rutger Hauer redo.

Originally directed by Robert Harmon, "The Hitcher" starred C. Thomas Howell as an ordinary teen who picks up the hitchhiker from hell, a role originated by Rutger Hauer. The serial killer torments the youth by implicating him in each of his crimes. Bay said saga fits the company template in that its premise offers a scare potential just as high with the current crop of teen moviegoers as it was when the original opened.

Focus Features' genre label, Rogue Pictures will distribute the remake.

    "Amityville" House Haunts Box Office
    Source: E!Online

Bad real estate made for good box office as The Amityville Horror easily moved in at the top of the weekend movie list.

The blood-spattered update of the 1979 horror flick about the purportedly true story of a bedeviled Long Island manse that not even the Extreme Home Makeover crew could fix scared up $23.3 million from Friday to Sunday, according to preliminary studio estimates.

Made on the cheap for about $19 million with a B-list cast headed by Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George, the MGM frightfest has already recouped its production costs. As the weekend's only major newcomer, Amityville overcame a slew of thumbs-down reviews to average $7,011 per site at 3,323 theaters, best among films in wide release.

The tally for the new Amityville compares favorably to the wall-bleeding original, which garnered $7.8 million at just 748 theaters in July 1979--an amount equivalent to about $20 million today when adjusted for inflation, according to movie-tracking Website boxofficemojo.com. The original film, which spawned seven sequels, most of which went directly to video, grossed $86.4 million in its day--that's nearly $220 million in 2005 dollars, per boxofficemojo.com.

With Amityville checking in at number one, Sahara too hot for Fever Pitch ">last week's chart-topper, Sahara sank one spot to two with $13.1 million, a dip of just 28 percent. Its two-week tally stands at $36.4 million. Fever Pitch, holding tight at number three, also had a minimal drop after a disappointing opening weekend, down 29 percent to $8.8 million. The Red Sox-themed romantic comedy has grossed $23.9 million in two weeks.

On the art-house circuit, David Duchovny's feature directing debut, House of D, opened to strong business. Playing at just two theaters, the coming-of-age drama, starring Duchovny, wife Teé Leoni and Robin Williams, earned $30,000.

Palindromes, Todd Solondz's character-shifting story of a girl whose dream of having a baby is frought with drama, averaged $8,776 at seven theaters for a $61,434 opening. The Year of Yao, a documentary chronicling the rookie season of the NBA's all-star Chinese import Yao Ming, averaged $2,166 at 12 theaters for $26,000.

Receipts were down for the eighth consecutive weekend. The top 12 movies totaled just $73.9 million, according to the box-office bean counters at Exhibitor Relations, down 13 percent from the same time last year.

Here's a rundown of the top 10 weekend films based on initial figures; final tallies will be released Monday:

    1. The Amityville Horror, $23.3 million
    2. Sahara, $13.1 million
    3. Fever Pitch, $8.8 million
    4. Sin City, $6.7 million
    5. Guess Who, $4.9 million
    6. Beauty Shop, $3.8 million
    7. Robots, $3.55 million
    8. Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous, $2.9 million
    9. The Pacifier, $2.4 million
    10. The Upside of Anger, $1.9 million

McFARLANE TOYS GETS RIGHTS TO NAPOLEON DYNAMITE
    Press Release

McFarlane Toys and Fox Licensing & Merchandising proudly announce a new licensing agreement bringing a "sweet" line of action figures based on characters from the hit cult-flick Napoleon Dynamite.

The "hilarious" (NY Post) and "wonderfully original" (People) comedy that has had dynamite theatrical staying power, incredible word of mouth and a distinct look and feel is now being represented with a brand-new line of Napoleon Dynamite figures.

The line will feature an assortment of figures including the film's quirky anti-hero Napoleon Dynamite, his mustachioed sidekick Pedro Sanchez and chatroom-junkie brother Kip.

"This is the new generation's cult classic film; fans will be repeating the lines over and over just like my generation did with three or four movies when I was 13," said McFarlane Toys founder Todd McFarlane. "My goal is to showcase the main characters of the movie and reward the fans with some of the more memorable and unforgettable scenes in action figure form."

"Napoleon Dynamite and action figure may seem like an oxymoron, but McFarlane Toys has the appreciation and understanding of this character and the film to create some truly fun and highly appealing toys," said Peter Byrne, Executive Vice President, Licensing, Twentieth Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising. "There is a huge pent up demand for merchandise for 'Napoleon Dynamite' and a McFarlane action figure will be a 'must have' for all fans."

The new line of Napoleon Dynamite from McFarlane Toys will be hitting shelves in fall 2005.

Napoleon Dynamite is a new kind of hero, complete with a tight 'fro, sweet moon boots and skills that can't be topped. Napoleon spends his days drawing mythical beasts, duking it out with his brother Kip and avoiding his scheming Uncle Rico. When two new friends enter Napoleon's life -- shy Deb and mustachioed Pedro -- the trio launches a campaign to elect Pedro for class president and make the student body's wildest dreams come true. But if Pedro is to beat stuck-up Summer, Napoleon will have to unleash his secret weapon...

A runaway comedy hit at the Sundance Film Festival and named Best Feature Film at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival, Napoleon Dynamite marks the feature film debut of an original new voice, director Jared Hess, who himself grew up in Preston, Idaho, and left his studies at Brigham Young University to make the film. Napoleon Dynamite is written by Jared and his wife, Jerusha Hess, and produced by Jeremy Coon, Chris Wyatt and Sean C. Covel. The comic cast includes Jon Heder, Jon Gries, Aaron Ruell, Efren Ramirez, Tina Majorino, Diedrich Bader and Haylie Duff.

Ask him what's the deal with "Iron Fist" while you're at it!

Believe it or not, K-Mart is now selling posters featuring "Napolean Dynamite".

In the same bin with Lindsey Lohan.

A remake of 'The Hitcher' is a big mistake.

Nobody is gonna play that road psycho better than Rutger Hauer.

    Classic film.

'Mad Max' Fan Convoy Ends in Arrests
    LAST UPDATE: 4/18/2005 10:16:56 AM
    Watch this story...

SAN ANTONIO - Eleven "Mad Max" fans of were arrested after alarming motorists as they made their way to a movie marathon in a theatrical convoy in which they surrounded a tanker truck armed with fake machine guns.

As the group was headed to San Antonio from nearby from Boerne on Saturday morning, police received several calls from motorists who reported a "militia" surrounding a tanker truck, a police report states.

Police charged nine people with obstruction of a highway and two others with possession of prohibited knives in addition to obstruction of a highway.

One of the organizers of the convoy, Chris Fenner, said the arrests were unfair. He said he didn't know why anyone would have confused the costumed crew recreating a scene from "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior" - set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland - with a real threat.

"I honestly don't know how that could be, because 'Road Warrior' was so over the top," he said.

About 25 people participated in the convoy and more than twice that number were expected to attend the movie marathon, which was canceled after the arrests.
