Default Buying a guitar an E-Bayotch

    Hey guys,

I've bought tons of stuff on Ebay, but always figured that I'd never buy a guitar without touching it first.

Well, G.A.S. (gear aquisition syndrome) has gotten the bettter of me.
I've got my eye on a certain fiddle that has been listed with a Buy It Now.
But before I lay out the $$$$$$$......... my question is this:

What have been you guy's experience with buying guitars on E-bay?
What can I do to cover as many bases as I can to say protected?

It looks like the seller will ship it using UPS. What kind of insurance/packing tips do you have? etc. etc. etc.....

    Thanks guys

I've bought every guitar I own currently, on ebay (Including my PRS) as well as sold quite a few. The best way to be sure is to check the feedback of the seller. Buy from reputable people. Most people on ebay are not looking to screw you. If it's someone who's done it alot and has all positive feedback, chances are you're safe. but, use paypal that way your money is protected. no-"check is lost in the mail" crap to deal with.

    Remember the old saying though-
"if it looks like a turd and smells like a turd..."
    use your better judgement.

I bought a few guitars on Ebay and really have had no problems. I always try to contact the seller with questions before I bid on anything.

That's the key. Ask every question you can possibly think of before you make a purchase. Ask about any dings, hardware problems, especially if the guy doesn't mention them at all and it's an overall vague description. You might want to ask about owner history, any repairs done to the instrument, etc. Also, don't assume that any tools that originally came with the guitar will be included with it.

Stick to buyers with an awesome feedback rating, follow the rest, and you should come out fine. You can try UPS shipping calculator if the guy's using UPS.

Well, he's got 100% feedback, but unfortunatly from only 6 prior auctions.

I would consider that to be safe...not everyone has a million things to sell on eBay, and not everyone wants to buy a lot of crap, so their count stays low.

eBay and, if you're using it, PayPal both have fraud programs in case you get scammed or whatever.

From someone who's sold and bought alot of items on Ebay, I follow Elvis' rule...TCB. Take Care of your Business. From a sellers standpoint, offer the most detailed description possible. The term mint is very subjective and what I consider mint may not be what you had in mind.

When buying, ask for a 24hour approval. Most folks are selling for 3 reasons...To make a profit, to unload a dog, or to sell something so they can buy something else. 2 out of 3 will work with you after the sale. The dog seller is hit and miss.

If you buy the guitar and it's not what you wanted take a moment before leaving negative feedback. Is the guitar just not comfortable to play? Can it be adjusted. Can the pickups be changed? If so, these are player/owner issues and not seller issues. If the guitar was described as mint and there is belt rash on the back, I'd talk to the seller.

As for shipping, I use both UPS and USPS. I've had only a few examples of UPS damaging something. When they do damage an item, it's a bitch to get an insurance refund. They drag on and on and on. I've had to get my lawyer involved and finally got some monies back. USPS has always been good with shipping. Anytime I've had a insurance claim, it's been paid no questions asked.

Pay a little extra and have it properly packed. I bought a guitar from a guy who sent it simply in the gig bag, no padding, no extra box, just guitar/gig bag with duct tape on the zipper!! Luckily the guitar was ok. I did send him an email questioning his packing abilities.

If you pay with paypal, you've got buyer protection. This helps ease the fears as well.

Anyway, just remember TCB and you should be fine. Good Luck.

One thing I would add to buying high priced items on ebay - get as much personal information from him as possible. Full name, address, LAND LINE phone number (not just cell phone). Check mapquest and verify that the address exists. Make a note of nearby towns (I'll tell you why in a second). Do an online white pages lookup on the guy - see if it comes up with the same address and phone number. Lastly call the guy up! Talk with him and see how he sounds. Ask him any and every question you can think of about the item you are buying. During the conversation, say something like "You know, I have a friend that just moved from <name a nearby town that you saw on mapquest> - is that anywhere near you?" Obviously if he lives where he says he does, he'll recognize the name of the nearby town immediately.

If anything sounds fishy, don't go through with the deal. There will be more auctions....
