    Default Am I losing it?

Ok, if any of you have the FUSE channel, im sure you have seen many of the new "metal" bands that are out today. So I just flipped it on tonight and im actually quite surprised that these bands know how to solo with floyds and actually know what a good guitar company is. Even though they are FAR from being godlike (preist, iron maiden, sabbath, =VH=), I am thinkin that at least the guitarists in those bands have at least some talent.

I was watchin it a few minutes ago and some band called kill switch engage came on and the lead singer was just fuckin screamin his head off and actin like a jack-ass but to my surprise, the bassist, drummer and guitarist were all pretty good. The guitarist was playin some ESP with a floyd and he did a pretty decent solo. I didnt get a look at his amps but if the guy can at least move his fingers fast enough for a solo, hes good in my book.

What do you guys think? Is there at least a general respect for the new guitarists of today or am I just losin it?

And for the record, I am still VERY loyal to the real metal (preist, iron maiden, sabbath, =VH=, etc...) so im not gunna go out and buy all of the new shitty stuff that todays bands have

Not all of today's bands are putting out "shitty" stuff in terms of musicianship. Now that said, most of the stuff that gets radio play is shitty. However, I do feel that Killswitch Engage kicks ass! In terms of respect for guitarists of today, need I say more than Alexi Laiho? This guy tears it up, and not only is he just absolutely on fire, but all of Children of Bodom kicks up a storm of ass! Also, I think Mark Tremonti plays a few killer face melters on the Alter Bridge CD. IMO there are plenty of great new guitar players out there, such as Dan and Justin Hawkins of The Darkness, who are both killer and do some great stuff, especially live. There are plenty of newer guitar players who get respect, just not many who are out in the mainstream.

The guitarists for Shadows Fall are quite good.As is Alexi Lahio from Children Of Bodom. But the guy has a shitty attitude. He comes off like an ass in his interviews.

New metal bands aren't shitty, you just get to see the shitty ones that get on MTV, there really are still some great bands out there. I'm sure everyone knows the Red Hot Chili Peppers, not really metal, or new, but that bassist fucking rips that thing up, music hasn't died, it's just hard to find these days. It's out there!

They just need to find a band with both a good guitarist, and a good singer.

They can't seem to quite get it right.

I think that there are some really good bands out there these days, the singing may not be for everyone but the guitarists are pretty damn good. Like everyone else has mentioned Alexi Laiho is awesome and so are the guys from Shadows Fall. Most of the guitar players for the "melodic death metal" bands are good too, i.e Soilwork, In Flames, Dark Tranquility. It seems to me that solos and decent muscianship are coming back, it may not be like the 80's with all the great virtuosos but is certainly better than what happened to guitar playing in the 90's.
