Default Used Toyota hybrid car going for more than new models

Used Prius prices like new: report

High gas prices, long waits bring used Prius prices above list price of a new model, newspaper says.
    April 11, 2005: 10:04 AM EDT

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Demand for the gas-electric hybrid Prius is so great that some used Priuses are selling for more than the list price for a new one, according to a published report.

USA Today reported Monday that buyers who want to avoid the typical two-month waiting period for the hot Toyota model are willing to pay the premium. Waits at some dealerships can be considerably longer. The market for the used Prius is so strong that some owners are trying to sell them for more than they paid for them.

The paper said that record gasoline prices is one reason for the strong demand. The Prius, which uses an electric motor in addition to a gasoline engine, is estimated by the Environmental Protection Agency to get 51 miles per gallon on the highway and 60 mpg in the city. (Because of its hybrid drivetrain, the Prius gets better mileage in stop-and-go city driving than on the highway.)

The 2005 Prius also had the highest owner satisfaction of any 2005 model, according to an owner survey by Consumer Reports magazine.

Buyers of new Priuses are paying above the sticker price for the cars, which is helping to support the price of the used cars. The new car lists for $20,975 to $26,640, Toyota says.

Mark Brueggemann, senior analyst for the car pricing service Kelley Blue Book, recommends that buyers wait.

"At $4,000 or $5,000 over sticker, you're really paying to be the first on your block to have one," he told the paper.

The paper reported that George Wu, 35, of Redondo Beach, Calif., listed his 2005 Prius with 180 miles on the odometer for sale at $31,495, which is about $1,000 more than he paid for it.

It also said that Rich Stevens, 81, of Des Moines owns two Priuses and plans to sell one of them and hang onto the other. His 2004 Prius with 16,000 miles is for sale at $25,000, which he told the paper is about what he paid for it a year ago. He is offering his new '05 model that he waited eight months to get for $29,000, about $1,000 above what he paid.

Don't be jealous. Those MPG #'s are complete BS. As soon as you turn on accessories, like the radio, or the vent (not even air conditioning), those numbers tank into the mid - upper 20 MPG range. Most 4 cylinder cars get better mileage then that.

and you've gotta drive "x" amount of years to see true savings. at least that's what some articles i've read claim.

And you only save if you drive stop-n-go in city traffic. If you are mostly driving on the highway, it's the same as a normal car.

I still like my 14 mpg gas-guzzling Chevy 1500 XCab. Those hybrids like the Toyota and Honda are soooooo small, I don't think I could fit my left ass-cheek in 'em. Now the new Honda Accord Hybrid I could probably squeeze into but with a price tag around $30 G's, I think I'll stick with my truck. So far I haven't seen a Prius carrying a 4x8 sheet of plywood around town...

I'd like to see the market break open on this. As is, there aren't enough
choices yet, and the Prius - for all it's hype - places a certain esthetic
demand on the owner that I can't get past. I was thinking of buying a new
car last year, but every dealership where I looked for a hybrid Explorer
didn't have one, much less a few to choose from...

Last I heard, they were discontinuing the Prius. True?

I'll tell you, I'd love to get that hybrid mileage, especially with the 80-mile a day commute I have. Basically I never drive my new Mustang GT to work, because it gets barely 20 MPG. Thankfully we have my wife's old Accord that I use as my commuter car, gets about 27.

The hybrid Honda Accord with 240 horses is very nice, but of course it's $30k.

Actually I just checked on www.honda.com. It's 255-HP, and gets 37 mpg on the highway and 29 city. Not bad at'all.

So when are they going to make an affordable, fast BMW that gets 40+ MPG? That's what I'm waiting for

Once again, the Japs fucking kicked our ass's. I've always owned American made cars, don't know about my next purchase though. That hybrid Accord sounds pretty good.

I've read numerous articles that it's only a matter of time before one of the big three goes away..............................

    Fucking Sad
