Daily Entertainment News (For the Week of 4/11-4/15)

    Stephen Sommers to Collide Worlds
    Source: ComingSoon!

Paramount has set The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and Van Helsing director Stephen Sommers to write and direct a remake of the 1951 sci-fi film When Worlds Collide, reports Variety. Sommers will produce with Bob Ducsay, his partner in the Sommers Co.

In the original, scientists discover that another planet is veering dangerously close to Earth, and they make plans for a small group of humans to leave the planet before the inevitable deadly collision.

The trade adds that When Worlds Collide is expected to be ambitious in budget and scale. Sommers will begin writing the film immediately.

New Line Picks Up Alten's Meg
    Source: ComingSoon!

New Line has picked up Meg, Steve Alten's bestselling novel about a voracious prehistoric shark, out of turnaround from Disney with Jan De Bont attached to direct.

Variety reports that the studio is fast-tracking production with the goal of a summer 2006 release. The budget is estimated to be $75 million.

The novel concerns an 80-foot-long ancestor of the great white shark, technically known as carcharodon megalodon but dubbed "Meg," that is found by a modern adventurer.

Larry Gordon and his partner Lloyd Levin are producing, along with Guillermo Del Toro, de Bont, Alten's managers Ken Atchity and Chi-Li Wong and Nick Nunziata.

Shane Salerno (Shaft) is doing a rewrite of the film. Casting will start once the rewrite is complete with production targeted for a fall start.

No Jurassic Park 4 Anytime Soon?
    Source: ComingSoon!

Dark Horizons has posted an update on Jurassic Park 4 taken from an interview with special effects guru Stan Winston which appeared in Cinemania magazine:

"It's definitely going ahead. There will be a Jurassic Park IV. We're all very excited at the prospect of working together again, because doing a Jurassic movie is like a big family reunion. Everyone pretty much knows everyone else, so it's a lot of fun. I also enjoy the challenge of once again raising the bar and bringing the world something extraordinary.

Admittedly things have somewhat slowed on the development of the film, as Steven [Spielberg] wasn't very enthused with the first couple of screenplay drafts. I think he felt neither of them balanced the science and adventure elements effectively. It's a tough compromise to reach, as too much science will make the movie too talky, but too much adventure will make it seem hollow. So we're sort of on hold at the moment, just waiting for the written word to be in place, and then it's full steam ahead, baby!"

Will Smith going down The River Kwai?
    Source: Moviehole

Presumably still a little peeved that he didn't get the Best Actor gong for "Ali" a couple of years back - he was rather superb, but it wouldn't be the first time those at the Kodak theatre have overlooked a performance - Will Smith's been down to the Blockbuster to check out a few films that are undoubtedly Academy shoe-in's.

The "Hitch" star has picked up "The Bridge on the River Kwai", and according to a report in this month's Empire Magazine, has expressed interest in doing a remake.

A stunning film, far ahead of it's time, "Kwai" focuses on British soldiers who are forced to build a railway bridge for their WWII Japanese captors, unaware of an allied mission to blow it up. It's a gem you wouldn't suspect anyone would have the beans to tackle.

So who would Smitty play? Shears (played by William Holden in the original)?, Colonel Nicholson (played by Sir Alec Guinness)?, Col. Saito? (played by Sessue Hayakawa)?....or is he merely interested in directing the retool?

Guess if he finds a studio that supports his idea - we'll find out in due course.

    "Sahara" Too Hot "Fever Pitch"
    Source: E!Online

The tall tale of a dashing treasure hunter (Matthew McConaughey), his goofy sidekick (Steve Zahn) and love interest (Penélope Cruz) overcame cool reviews to scorch last week's top flick, Sin City, as well as the baseball-based romantic comedy Fever Pitch.

Sahara tallied $18.5 million from Friday to Sunday, according to preliminary studio figures.

The PG-13 adaptation of the Clive Cussler novel, helmed by Breck "Son of Michael" Eisner, averaged $5,866 at 3,154 sites. Although the haul wasn't blockbuster-sized, it did keep the new management at troubled Paramount happy. The opening was higher than prerelease tracking data indicated and the studio said the film's "solid" showing in the heartland as an indication that business may hold up.

Sin City, meanwhile, dropped 52 percent from its opening week, taking in $14.1 million in second place. The R-rated Dimension spin on the graphic novel has grossed $50.7 million in two weeks.

The Fever Pitch pulled both male (43 percent) and female (58 percent) fans and earned generally good reviews, but failed to ignite the box office, debuting in third place with $13 million. Loosely adapted from the Nick Hornby novel about British soccer devotion and directed by the Farrelly brothers, the film teams Jimmy Fallon as a teacher obsessed with the Red Sox and Drew Barrymore as his reluctant gal-pal.

"It may have alienated guys with too much romance, and it may have alienated women with too much baseball," Exhibitor Relations boss Paul Dergarabedian told the Associated Press. It also may have alienated New Yorkers, whose Yankees lost to the Sox last fall. Whatever, the PG-13 Fox release averaged $3,979 at 3,267 sites.

Fox's distribution chief Bruce Snyder sounded a more optimistic note, saying that Barrymore's romantic comedies have "legs." He cited Never Been Kissed, which debuted in 1999 with just $11.4 million, but went on to earn a respectable $52.4 million domestically.

Finally, in limited release, Kung Fu Hustle hustled up crowded houses, averaging a spectacular $41,861 at just seven sites for an impressive $293,028 opening haul. Stephen Chow wrote, directed and stars in the R-rated spin on martial arts mayhem, released in North America by Sony.

Overall the top 12 movies earned $80.2 million, an 18 percent drop from this time last year, which was Easter weekend headlined by The Passion of the Christ, and a 17 percent drop from last weekend. Business has been down for seven straight weekends since a promising start to the year.

Final figures are due Monday. Here's a round-up of the top 10, based on estimates compiled by Exhibitor Relations:

    1. Sahara, $18.5 million
    2. Sin City, $14.1 million
    3. Fever Pitch, $13 million
    4. (tie) Guess Who, $7.1 million
    4. (tie) Beauty Shop, $7.1 million
    6. Robots, $4.6 million
    7. Miss Congeniality 2: Armed & Fabulous, $4.1 million
    8. The Pacifier, $3 million
    9. TheRing Two, $2.9 million
    10. The Upside of Anger, $2.6 million

TLC adjusts after 'Trading Spaces' crashes

    David Bauder
    AP Television Writer
    Apr. 10, 2005 11:59 PM

NEW YORK - Two years ago, the people at TLC wouldn't have traded spaces with anybody.

The home makeover show "Trading Spaces" was one of those cultural phenomena most tiny cable networks can only dream about, and TLC rode the wave to record ratings and attention.

    Then it crashed.

Doomed by overexposure, imitation and changing tastes, "Trading Spaces" lost much of its audience and TLC has paid the price. Its president, Roger Marmet, was ousted. Some two dozen jobs were lost. And TLC is struggling to change the perception that it's a network in free fall.

As they pick up the pieces, the executives at parent Discovery Communications are left to ponder whether this was avoidable, or simply the inevitable effect of gravity, TV style.

"You can't get to the stratosphere and stay there," said John Harvey, senior producer at "Trading Spaces." "It rarely happens in this industry."

The show's Saturday night viewership has nose-dived from 659,000 last year to 429,000 this year, according to Nielsen Media Research. The decline is 46 percent among the youthful demographic that advertisers seek. This past weekend the show debuted in a new format, without perky hostess Paige Davis. Meanwhile, ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" - starring former "Trading Spaces" carpenter-hunk Ty Pennington - is a hit that drew 15.5 million viewers last week.

At its peak, TLC was running "Trading Spaces" episodes as many as 10 times a week. Harvey's production company was churning out themed specials to feed an insatiable hunger. Davis' face was on magazine covers and in TV commercials.

Both TLC and competitors sought to duplicate the success. At one point, Discovery CEO Billy Campbell counted some 28 replicas of the show all over the dial. Even VH1 tried making over rock stars' homes.

"Did we overexpose the show and the genre?" Harvey asked. "I think the answer is yeah. Here's the dilemma that every network doing this faces: You can stand back and be pristine and say we're going to jealously guard this ... But if you do that, everyone will still cherry-pick and steal your ideas. That's what happens when something is a success."

The classic case of overexposure is "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," which put ABC in such a deep hole it is only recovering this season.

Campbell argues that TLC didn't overexpose "Trading Spaces." The cumulative effect of all those imitators hurt the most, he said.

"It's always tempting when you have success," he said. "Look how many people tried to copy `Friends.' Look how many people tried to copy 'Seinfeld.' I saw 'Grey's Anatomy' the other night, and it's basically a young person's 'ER.' As a programmer, it's hard not to emulate success because that's your goal, to make successful programming."

Still, resisting the temptation would have served TLC better, he said. Similar makeover shows like "While You Were Out" and "What Not to Wear" have dragged down TLC's ratings. Campbell faults TLC management for not developing other distinctive programming.

"They made something that they thought was going to be a great ride and it was for a while," said Burton Jablin, chief executive of the HGTV network. "But they couldn't get that magic to happen again in other programs in that genre."

As an entire network devoted to home improvements and entertaining, it had to hurt HGTV to miss out on "Trading Spaces." Now that it has faded, Jablin doesn't gloat.

While HGTV has a clearly defined niche, TLC is a broader interest network. The "life unscripted" motto tells the tale; TLC presents nonfiction programming of all kinds. But this can be a problem: when new fans tune in for the first time because of "Trading Spaces," they believe that is what the network is all about, he said.

"So when you try to develop other programming, the audience says, `Wait a minute. TLC is about "Trading Spaces" kind of shows. What is this all about?'" Jablin said. "It's an incredibly difficult challenge."

"Trading Spaces" remains on the air, and is comfortably successful by cable standards. It's just not a phenomenon. The new format gives the show a chance for a fresh start.

"It's interesting and has a different kind of feel to it," Harvey said. "You feel like you're watching and eavesdropping more, because there's no one between you and the action."

TLC reached overseas for a new general manager. He's David Abraham, who has been in charge of Discovery Networks in Britain. His mission is simple: turn around ugly numbers like the 33 percent drop in prime-time viewership TLC has suffered from last year.

Campbell still wants to focus on nonfiction programming, but feature more real people. One idea is "The Sit Down," like one of those courtroom shows that resolve disputes, but done with a Mafia-style don.

Seeing what happened to TLC almost makes you wonder if it's worth having a megahit that burns bright but burns out fast. MTV lives off that philosophy, but it always seems to have another sensation around the corner. When "The Osbournes" faded from view, "Pimp My Ride" was there to pick up the slack.

But not everyone is MTV. Maybe a slow, steady growth - like the kind experienced by HGTV - is better.

It's almost like the TV equivalent of an age-old question: is it better to have loved and lost, or to never have loved at all?

Most people wouldn't trade the experience.

But every hit has a flip side.

XBox 2 To Debut on MTV Before E3
    Source Gamesarefun

Microsoft has announced that it will not be unveiling the Xbox 2 (codenamed "Xenon") at E3, as was previously expected. Rather, it will be revealed on May 12 in a MTV special. Sony's PS3 and Nintendo's Revolution are expected to be unveiled at E3 on May 16.

"It doesn't make sense to unveil the product behind a closed door, at a trade-only event. We wanted to talk directly to the consumer first," said Peter Moore, Corporate VP of Worldwide Marketing and Publishing for Xbox.

The MTV special will be hosted by Elijah Wood, star of The Lord of the Rings movies and feature a performance by the rock group "The Killers." Many other celebrities and athletes will be on hand to show off the new console. MTV will air teaser spots prior to the event and screening parties will be held in countries in which MTV airs.

Moore stated that the launch decision is to not only "feed the core" gamers, but also to "captivate the masses." The unveiling on MTV is a "signal of the strong change in the way we do business." Themes of optimism and community will be stressed in the campaign, said Moore.

This meshes with what Ourcolony.net, the ilovebees-like marketing tool for Xbox 2, states. "Colony isn't about alternate reality gaming, it is reality. It's about the reality of your world, your friends, your life. Colony isn't political, it's global."

Moore also stated that the companies behind games for the Xenon's launch will be based all around the world. The Xbox has done very poorly in Japan, and Microsoft wants to change the idea that Xbox is an American brand.

Xenon is expected to launch in October/November of this year.

Wahlberg in Talks to Play Vince Papale
    Source: ComingSoon!

Disney is in talks with Mark Wahlberg to star in a film based on the underdog story of Vince Papale, a Philadelphia Eagles fan who answered an open tryout and emerged with a spot on the team.

The film, which had been called "Invincible" but is undergoing a title change, will be directed this summer by Ericson Core. Gordon Gray and Mark Ciardi, who produced Miracle and The Rookie, produce with Ken Mok.

The film focuses on Vince Papale, who in 1976 was a 30-year-old bartender who answered the call when incoming Eagles coach Dick Vermeil decided to shake up his team by holding an open tryout. Papale was among a swarm of fans, but he was the only one left standing by the end of the tryout.

Brad Gann and Mike Rich wrote the script.
